NCDPI Mathematics Unpacking Document Revisions
Second Grade
The Unpacking Documents are designed to help North Carolina educators teach the Common Core State Standards (Standard Course of Study). NCDPI staff are continually updating and improving these tools to be helpful and specific. We believe that as this document is used, teachers and educators will find ways in which the unpacking can be improved and made ever more useful. Please send feedback to us at and we will use your input to refine our unpacking of the standards. Thank You!
Date / Page # / Domain/Cluster / Revised ContentJuly 2013 / 5, 10 / Operations & Algebraic Thinking / Added vocabulary:
Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction.

June 2013 / Removed the At a Glance Page (page 2) transitional document
24 / Measurement and Data
2.MD.2 / Changed:
Example: A student measured the length of a desk in both feet and inches. She found that the desk was 3 feet long. She also found out that it was 36 inches long.
33 / Geometry
2.G.2 / Added:
This standard is a precursor to learning about the area of a rectangle and using arrays for multiplication.
33 / Geometry
2.G.3 / Added:
It is important for students to see circles and rectangles partitioned in multiple ways so they learn to recognize that equal shares can be different shapes within the same whole.
