ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2011-2012

Dear dignitaries on the dais, guests, colleagues and my dear students,

Today, as we celebrate the fourteenth college day of KCG College of Technology, I am proud to state that our institute scripted many success stories and reached important milestones this academic year and continues to grow and shine in every aspect. As we continue our legacy of academic excellence in teaching, research and service-oriented outreach, we are committed to achieving excellence in technical education and producing responsible citizens and progressive leaders. On this great occasion, I consider it an honour to present the 14th college day report.

The college, established in 1998 as National Institute of Technology by our beloved founder Dr KCG Verghese, now offers 7 under-graduate and 5 post-graduate programmes.

Accreditation & ISO Certification

Following the visit of the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) team in July 2011, the department of ECE is to be accredited and the departments of CSE, EEE and Mechanical Engineering are to be reaccredited. The approval communication from NBA is expected soon.

We successfully got our ISO 9001:2008 Certification renewed for the academic year 2011-2012.

·  C.Pradeesh Kumar, Asst.Prof/CSE, replaced Dr Subbaiah as the Management Representative in June 2011.

·  An ISO Awareness lecture was conducted during April 2011 by Mr Giridharan. The ISO co-ordinators of all the departments attended the useful training session.

·  The first of the two scheduled Internal auditing of files was conducted on 8 November 2011 and the second auditing was held on 11 November 2011.

·  The first of the two scheduled Management Review Meeting was conducted on 15 November 2011 and the second on 18 November 2011.

·  The continuous assessment audit was conducted by the BSI team on 21 November 2011.

·  The ISO Core team comprising Prof.V.Subbaroyan, the ISO Co-ordinator for the College, Mr.Pradeesh Kumar-AP, Management Representative, Mr.Suresh, Deputy Registrar, Prof.Govindaraju, Dr.Kumaraswamy and Prof. meet periodically.

·  It has been planned to go for ISO re-certification in November 2012.

Academic achievements

The achievements of our staff and students are many and on this occasion I would like to list some of their academic achievements which brought laurels to the institute.

With immense joy I state that six of our students secured university ranks in the Anna University Examinations. Ashok Kumar of Department of Aeronautical Engineering and Vinoth H of Department of MCA secured first ranks; Ferdin Sagai Donbosco and Merin Mary Thomas of Department of Aeronautical Engineering students secured the 8th and the 31st rank respectively; Deepika of the Department of EEE secured the 39th rank and R Sankeerthana, a student of ME- VLSI, secured the 4th rank.

The M.E. students of CSE Department achieved 100 per cent results in their 3rd semester. Congratulations to all the achievers!

Research & Development

Our college encourages the faculty to carry out research in their respective fields. Over a hundred research papers were presented by our faculty members in various international and national conferences and a number of research papers were published in reputed journals.

Papers Presented / Published

·  Dr P.A.Balakrishnan, Dean (Academic Research), got 6 papers published in international journals. He is also a peer reviewer for three international journals and technical reviewer for McGraw-Hill publications.

·  Prof. V. Subbaroyan’s (HOD/ECE) paper on “Different Methods of Object Recognition” was published in the International Journal of Digital Image Processing.

·  Dr. T. Ravi’s (HOD/CSE) paper on “Channel Assignment Scheme for Reusability Technique Using Prioritized Algorithm” was published in the International Journal of Wireless Communication.

·  Mr. S. Sankar’s (CSE) paper on “A Comparative Study: Data Compression on Tanglish Natural Language Text” was published in the International Journal of Computer Applications.

·  Mr. P. Shanmugavel’s (CSE) paper on “An Overview of Fracture Analysis in Functionally Graded Materials” was published in the European Journal of Scientific Research..

·  Prof. V. Subbaroyan’s (HOD/ECE) paper on “An Empirical Comparison of Three Object Recognition Methods” was published in Journal of Computer Applications.

·  Dr. Albert P’ Rayan (S&H), has published a paper titled ‘Engineering English: A Critical Evaluation’ in the Journal: Language in India, Volume 11

·  Dr. Albert P’ Rayan’s (S&H) book ‘English Blues’, has been published by The New Indian Express.

·  Dr Amrutha’s(S&H) paper titled ‘“Structural Parameters and Vibrational Frequency Analysis”-has been published in Journal of Elixir Online Journal.

·  Dr Ann Jasmine Jose’s (S&H) paper titled ‘“Synthesis of Monodisperse nanoporous Polymer Beads via Seeded Polymerization”-has been published in the International Journal of Nano Technology and its Applications, Vol.5, No.3, 2011.

·  Dr. R. Magesh, Librarian has published a paper titled “ICT Based Resource (Internet) and their Usage Patterns Amongst the Academic Communities in Thiruvalluvar University” (ISSN: 0976-7274), Professional Journal of Library and Information Technology (PJOLAIT) Vol 1. No.2, April-Sept.2011. and another paper titled “Digital Resources and Pharmacy Students of Annamalai University: A study”, Journal of Annamalai University, Part – A, Humanities, 2011.

·  Ms.C.Emilin Shyni (CSE), has contributed a paper on ‘SQLIVD-AOP: Preventing SQL Injection Vulnerabilities Using Aspect Oriented Programming through Web Services’ and published in Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg-2011, pp 327-337.

·  Mr.K.Karthikeyan’s (EEE) paper on ‘Two Layered Embedded Encryption for Multiple Frequency RFID Tags’ – has been published by Transtech Publications.

·  Dr. R. Magesh, Librarian, presented a paper titled ‘Digital Library Services’ in the National Seminar on Technology Enabled Library & Information Services in the Digital Era (TELIS 2012) organized at Dr. M.G.R. Janaki College of Arts & Science for Women, Chennai.

·  Ms. P. Anuradha (CSE), presented paper titled ‘Design and Implementation of zigbee-RFID based Vehicle Tracking’ in the 2nd International Conference on “Sustainable Energy and Power System” organized at MGR University, Chennai.

·  Ms. G. Jayanthi, (S&H), presented paper titled ‘Nano Technology’ in the National Conference on “Synthesis, Optical, Morphological Studies’’ organized at Sriram Engineering College, Chennai.

·  Dr. Anita Manuel presented a paper ‘Empowering the Silent and Silenced Subaltern’ at the International Conference on Professional English organized by Veltech Dr RR & Dr SR Technical University, Chennai.

·  Mr. R Siva (CSE) presented a paper titled ‘ Cyber Security” in the National Conference organized at Gojan School of business and Technology, Chennai.

I am proud to state that many of our staff were resource persons at many national conferences and some serve as reviewers and editorial board members of various international and national academic journals. On behalf of the Management, I congratulate all of them.

Reviewers / Editorial Board Members

·  Dr P.A.Balakrishnan, Dean (A R) is a peer reviewer for three international journals and technical reviewer for McGraw-Hill publications.

·  Dr.T.Ravi (HOD/CSE) is an Advisory Board Member of Science Academy Publisher, UK. He is also a reviewer for IET Journal.

·  Dr. Albert P’ Rayan, Asso. Prof. of English/ S&H is the editor of English Language Teaching Contacts Scheme - India & Sri Lanka Bulletin, and is also on the editorial board of World Journal of English Language (published by Sciedu Press, Canada), and English for Specific Purposes World (published in Russia).

Research Supervision

·  Dr T. Ravi, HOD/ CSE is now a recognized supervisor for PhD programmes in Anna University of Technology-Chennai, Anna University-Coimbatore, and Manomanium Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli.

Resource Persons and Guest Lectures

·  Prof. Sivaramakrishna Das, HOD / S&H, gave an introductory talk on ‘Applications of Fuzzy Theory’ in the workshop organized at Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science, on 10 August 2011.

·  Dr T.Ravi,HOD/ CSE. was the Session Judge in the 2nd International Conference on ‘Sustainable Energy and Power System’ organized jointly by IET, Chennai and MGR University at MGR University, Chennai in July 2011.

·  Dr Albert P’ Rayan, Asso. Prof. of English, delivered the keynote address in the National Conference on ‘Modern Methodologies in Teaching English Language Skills’, at Kamaraj College of Engineering, Virudunagar on 9 September 2011.

·  Dr Anita Manuel, Asso. Prof. of English, served as a resource person in the National Seminar on ‘Women In Theatre’ organized at Newman College, Thodupuzha on 13 and 14 December 2011.

·  Prof. Sivaramakrishna Das, HOD / S&H, delivered a guest lecture on ‘Discrete Mathematics and Applications’ at Dhanish Ahmed Engineering College, Chennai, on 11October 2011.

·  Mr. S. Sankar, Asso. Prof. / CSE, delivered a guest lecture on ‘Core Java Programming using Net beans IDE’ at Adhiparasakthi College of Engineering, Melmaruvathur, on 11 June 2011.

PhD awarded

The number of teaching staff with the PhD qualification is on the rise every year. Mr. C.Vaithilingam, HOD/ EEE, was awarded PhD by Anna University in 2011. Congratulations to Dr Vaithilingam!

National Conferences

The English division of the Department of Science & Humanities organized a national seminar on ‘Designing Materials for the English Lab’ on 14-15 October 2011.

The Department of EEE, with the support of the IEEE Madras section, is organizing its first national level conference on “Recent Trends in Electric Power, Drives and Control (RTEPDC-2012)” on 24 March 2012.

The Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) Department of KCG College of Technology and the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) are jointly organizing a National Conference on ‘Emerging Trends in Computation and Information Technology’ on 30 March 2012.

Faculty Development Programmes (FDP)

Over 30 Faculty Development Programmes were conducted at KC Tech to equip the staff with the recent trends and skills in order to groom them to be efficient knowledge dispensers. The staff also attended over 50 workshops and seminars in various institutions to equip themselves with knowledge and skills to be better educators. Some of the FDP programmes organized in KC Tech were: Linux Workshop, Mac OS Training, Fuzzy Logic Using MatLab, Effective Communication, APPLE i Mac and Engineering Graphics.

KCG Toastmasters Club was set up last year to help build confidence in public speaking and to hone one’s presentation skills and leadership qualities – skills required to ignite career growth.

KCG Toastmaster Club members meet once a week with activities to improve the learning, listening and leadership skills.

Symposiums

All the core departments of our college conducted technical symposiums and created opportunities for students to exhibit their talents and skills in different fields. Various events like Quiz, Debugging, Short Film Making, Web Design, Gaming, How the Stuff Works, Circuit Debugging, Mock Interview, Circuitrix and Robotics, Poster Design and Website Design, Googler, Net Carving, Pentathlon, Robowars and RC cars, Junk Yard, Cad walk, Sci-fi writing and Rocketry were some of the events that were organized and drew a lot of crowd and applause from the participants from various city colleges.

AETHEROS 2011, Levitate-2011 and EPISTIMO-2011 were organized by the departments of Aeronautical engineering, EEE and MCA respectively on 17 September 2011,

Mechamorphis-2011 and Cseismic-2K11 were organized the departments of Mechanical engineering and CSE respectively on 17 September 2011,

Reverberation-2K11 and Techzavest-2K11 were organized by the departments of ECE and IT respectively on 1 October 2011.

Digital Library

A separate Digital Library has been established in order to enable the users to browse the e-journals, e-book & e-learning materials. Under the INDEST consortium, the library provides on-line access to a large number of full-text journal databases such as IEEE, Springer link, ASME, McGraw Hill, J-gate Engg & Tech, Elsevier Science Direct, ASTM Digital Library from various publishers. The digital section contains about 130 IIT – NPTEL Video courses.

Co-curricular and Extra-curricular Activities

This academic year saw many first time events that could be considered as important milestones in the history of KC Tech. Some of them were: TEDxKCG and Hindustan Young Leaders Conference.

Thinkers, entertainers and successful innovators shared their experiences leaving the audience thinking at the TEDxKCG event held on 3rd March 2012. Successful people from diverse areas were invited to speak about their experiences. The day was studded with stars like danseuse Anita Ratnam , India’s youngest CEO Ashwin Ramesh, Musician Marti Bharath, noted photographer and film maker Sebastian Cortes, Uma Prajapati , Founder of Upasana, Paul Basil, CEO, Villgro Innovations Foundation , Rasik Ravindra, Polar scientist, adventurer and Director at the National

Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research , Dharmesh Jadeja, Calligraphist and Architect, Flutist Shruti Sagar and Edward DeGenaro, Fusion Guitarist – to name a few. They all shared their experiences and inspired the future engineers and innovators of KC Tech to strive and earn a name for themselves in this competitive world.

Another important event, The Hindustan Young Leaders Conference was organized from 16th to 18th March 2012. The event was graced by eminent personalities including Mr T P Srinivasan, Former Permanent Representative to the UN, Ms Jennifer McIntyre, US Consul General, Chennai, and Mr Gopal Krishna Gandhi and Ms.Sheela Rani Chunkath, I.A.S. Additional Chief Secretary, Govt. of Tamil Nadu. The event also attracted a number of foreign delegates.

The IEEE Students Branch was established at KC Tech on 16 December 2011 with Dr.C.Vaithilingam, HoD/ EEE, as the branch counselor. The chief guest of the inaugural ceremony, Major.V.V.Chandrasekharan, Treasurer, IEEE Madras section, asked the students to be innovative and also work to become good leaders in order to stand out in the crowd. Fifty students from IT, EEE, ECE depts have become IEEE members.

Some other important events and celebrations held at KC Tech include the Orientation Day for the fresh entrants, Teacher’s Day, Engineer’s Day, National Education Day. The International Year of Chemistry (IYC 2011). KC Tech Sports Day was celebrated on 9 March 2012 and the overall championship was bagged by the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Training & Placement Cells

The Training Cell organized a number of training programmes during the academic year 2011-2012 in order to develop our students’ overall personality and upgrade their interpersonal skills, presentation skills, reasoning skills and interview facing skills.

Some of the training programmes arranged to prepare the students for placements were: Mission Possible, Motivation Programme, Basic English Language Skills, Business English Certificate (BEC) courses, Quantitative Ability, Aptitude, Soft Skills and Pre-placement Training.
