Learning Outcomes
This lesson will provide background knowledge on pollution before the class begins read the picture book, THE WUMP WORLD by Bill Peet. Bill Peet uses aliens from Outer Space and innocent "Wump" characters to portray the evil effects of pollution on a beautiful planet. Students will become aware of the dangers of pollution, and ways we can help fight it.
Preparation and Materials:
· Book The Wump World by Bill Peet
· "Exploring Pollution" see the activity sheet “General Pollution”
· pencils
· computers for each student.
Method:
· The following lesson will take place during a 45 minute class period in a computer lab if possible. Students will work on an individualized basis and make their own decisions. (Hopefully, some might be inspired to visit some of these sites at home or in the library on their own time.) Follow up with a class discussion the next day. Before you give them this assignment, you will show them the cover of the new book, The Wump World by Bill Peet, and a few pictures from inside the book. Then predict what it is about. Ask my students what they already know about Pollution to activate their prior knowledge. Following is the actual assignment that you can hand out to them.
Exploring Pollution:
This virtual field trip will introduce you to important information about pollution, which is the main idea of the reading book, The Wump World by Bill Peet. You will have an opportunity to explore this topic on the Internet as you learn about different kinds of pollution and how we can help stop it. You will be improving your reading comprehension as you have fun visiting Web sites. Go to the Web site
(http://www.epa.gov/recyclecity/mainmap.htm) and click on "Go to Recycle City." You will see a sign that says, "Welcome to Recycle City," and a picture of the town. To get started, just click on any section of Recycle City that you want to explore. Many parts of Recycle City give you information on recycling, reuse and waste reduction. Click on the ones of interest to you and take notes about kinds of pollution and prevention. When you leave this place, you'll know much more about what you can do to protect our environment. Use the knowledge you gained from visiting Recycle City to answer the following questions:
· *What are some causes of pollution?
· *What are some effects of pollution?
*Name some ways we can protect the environment. You may visit either of these other Web sites and jot down notes about what you discover about pollution and solutions.
