Summer Study Abroad Program Director Application

Program Description

·  The USG European Council administers seven summer study abroad programs. These programs are located in Berlin, London, Madrid, Paris, St. Petersburg, Edinburgh, and Waterford.

·  USG faculty and staff members are encouraged to apply for any of these programs.

·  Program Directors are not paid a salary by the European Council. Salary arrangements are to be made directly between the program director and their home institution.

·  Additional information for each program can be found on our website at ecstudyabroad.net.

General Information and Selection Criteria

·  Faculty and staff interested in submitting an application may do so at any time. Applications will be kept on file and reviewed whenever an opening occurs.

·  Program directors are appointed for a term of three years subject to satisfactory annual evaluations. At the end of the term they may reapply for an additional three-year term. Directors may continue to reapply providing they remain in good standing with EC guidelines and receive satisfactory annual program evaluations. More information regarding the appointment and responsibilities of directors is available in the EC Program Director Guidelines.

·  Program directors may be removed from responsibilities and terminated based on conditions, which may include unsatisfactory performance reviews, unsatisfactory program evaluations, malfeasance, inability to adhere to USG/EC policies and other criteria as determined by the EC Executive Committee.

·  Program directors may, but usually do not, teach any courses. Their primary responsibilities are related to the administrative, budgetary and student affairs aspects of the program. In some cases a home institution may require a program director to teach a course in order to obtain their salary.

·  Faculty or staff seeking to serve as program directors will be evaluated in terms of their experiences or skills relevant to directing a program.

·  In addition to the EC Program Director Guidelines, criteria which are especially relevant to selecting program directors include the following:

§  Study abroad program development and administration experience

§  Study abroad program budgeting and monetary management experience

§  Oversight of faculty from diverse disciplines and backgrounds

§  Cross-cultural knowledge and experience

§  Study abroad program and site management experience

§  Knowledge of and experience with the culture, society, history and politics of the country or countries of the study abroad program

§  Knowledge and/or experience in developing crisis management plans

§  Knowledge and/or experience in the reporting methods as detailed in the Clery Act

·  Additional criteria which will be considered include the following:

§  Experience working with students outside the typical classroom setting

§  Experience working with a diverse (gender, ethnicity, and religion) student population

§  Knowledge of and experience with first-aid procedures and techniques

·  Interested faculty should submit completed application forms and supporting materials in an electronic PDF format to the European Council Coordinator, Gisele Greaux at . Both electronic and printed versions should be submitted to their EC Campus Representative, who then submits the printed application with signatures to the EC Coordinator. IV. Approval Signatures of Applicant

“If I am accepted, I understand that directing a study abroad program involves year-around responsibilities, including but not limited to budget design and management, faculty and course selection, faculty development, publicity, recruitment, and oversight of the program on the site in consultation with the site director.

If I am accepted, I understand further that directing a summer study abroad program is an intensive and comprehensive experience, involving faculty members with students in diverse activities outside the classroom. Therefore, I understand that I will be obligated to be on call during the whole program unless specifically released and to respond to student and faculty problems and concerns as they arise. In addition, I will organize and conduct orientations before and during the program, accompany students on excursions, assist students and faculty in planning independent travel, assist faculty with their class and teaching preparations, supervise the program staff including student assistants, and collaborate with other program faculty and students in scheduling and conducting joint activities.

I understand further that the demands on program directors, the group living arrangements, and the program schedule generally do not accommodate dependent children, although there are exceptions in some of the programs. Finally I do understand that failure to comply with any of the established USG/EC guidelines could result in termination from the position of program director.

By signing below, I indicate that I have ready and understand all of the above information.”
