The Citadel Board of Visitors held a teleconference meeting of voting members at 1500 hours on 26 October 2005 for the purpose of considering a recommendation regarding the naming of the auditorium in Mark Clark Hall.

The following voting members of the Board of Visitors were present: Colonel William E. Jenkinson III, Chairman; Colonel Harvey M. Dick; Colonel Douglas A. Snyder; Colonel W. Henry Johnson; Colonel Allison Dean Love; Colonel Harry B. Limehouse, Jr.; and Colonel Claude W. Burns III. The following members of The Citadel staff were present: Colonel Charles B. Reger, acting as Secretary, and Brigadier General Donald A. Steven.

Major General Arthur H. Baiden III, Vice Chairman, Colonel Glenn D. Addison, Colonel John R. Douglas, Colonel William G. Kastner, Major General Stanhope Spears, and Dr. Charles E. Millwood, Jr., representing Mrs. Inez M. Tenenbaum, State Superintendent of Education, were absent.

The meeting was held in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act.

The Chairman, Colonel William E. Jenkinson III, called the meeting to order and asked Colonel Limehouse to chair the discussion. Colonel Limehouse, chairman of the Honorary Degrees, Palmetto Medal, and Special Recognition Committee, first made reference to a memorandum sent to General Poole from the Naming Opportunities Committee of The Citadel Foundation, copies of which had been provided to the members of the Board of Visitors prior to the teleconference. He said that in order to accelerate the naming process, the committee had met by telephone and had discussed a recommendation to present to the Board. He noted that the monetary threshold for naming of the auditorium had been met, as established in Policy and Procedures for Gift Naming Opportunities and Other Recognition, adopted by The Citadel Board of Visitors on April 12, 2003. Therefore, the committee had voted to recommend to the full board the following motion:

MOTION

The Honorary Degrees, Palmetto Medal, and Special Recognition Committee recommends that The Citadel Board of Visitors approve that the auditorium in Mark Clark Hall be known as the Buyer Auditorium, in recognition of Stephen E. Buyer, ’80, and the exemplary service to his country as both a soldier and as a member of the United States Congress, and in appreciation of his loyal support of his alma mater.

The motion was seconded by Colonel Harvey M. Dick. Colonel Burns commented that Congressman Buyer was his classmate at The Citadel and the Class of 1980 is renowned for its historical giving record. The motion was approved unanimously.

The teleconference adjourned at 1510 hours.
