Moderator/Facilitator Responsibilities Virtual Conferencing Sessions

Before the Session

Arrive at your session 30 minutes before the start time.

A SOA staff member will introduce themselves to you prior to the start of your session. Staff members will remain in the room during the entire session. If you need assistance during your session and a staff member is unavailable (i.e., data projector, microphones, etc.), please have someone step out into the hall and look for an SOA staff person for assistance.

If the lighting in your room is not conducive to the presentation, please ask a staff member for assistance.

Introduce yourself to each speaker.

Discuss the Q & A schedule for the program with the speakers. It is recommended that a timed Q & A session of 5 minutes be inserted at the conclusion of each speaker or after no more than 30 minutes of presentation. This allows the session to be more engaging as participants interact with the speakers. It also allows the speaker(s) to be responsive to participant needs by adjusting sessions based on participant inquiries.

Remind the speakers to repeat each question after it is asked, before answering.

At the Start of the Session

Read The Opening Script

Welcome to the Valuation Actuary Symposium Session 10 PD: Using Asset Liability Management (ALM) to Improve General Account Results. My name is Chuck Souza and I will be your moderator for this session. Today’s session will have two audiences, those that are present in the room, as well

as a virtual audience of attendees from across the globe. In order to keep today’s program engaging and effective, I will be providing an opportunity for both audiences to ask questions during the presentation.

At each Q & A session, I will open up the room to questions from our live audience first. If you wish to ask questions please come to the microphones that are located in the room. I will then follow with questions from our virtual audience. Those attending virtually can type in their questions at any time during the presentation. Those questions will be read aloud for the speaker’s response. In order to remain on schedule, the Q & A sessions will be limited to 5 minutes for each speaker. If we receive additional questions we will return to those questions during our final Q & A session.

Before we begin I would like to remind you of the Society of Actuaries Antitrust policy. You can find that policy located in the back of your program.

For today’s program, I would like to introduce to you:

Provide the names of all the speakers that will be presenting.

Introduce each speaker at the beginning of their portion of the program.

During the Session

Timing - keep the session on schedule – end on time.

Ensure that the presentations stay on track and that they do not turn into sales pitches for their company or product.

After the Session

  • At the Conclusion, ask our live attendee to please return completed evaluation to the designated area in the back of the room or just outside the room.
  • For our virtual attendees, let them know they will be provided with an automated evaluation and that we appreciate their response. Let them know we are particularly interested in their feedback on our new virtual conferencing option.

Thank you for volunteering as a moderator –

your participation is appreciated!
