Exchange Programme for Young Brazilian, Mexican and Colombian Lawyers

Opportunity for chambers to host lawyers

This programme was initially established by the Bar Council, the Law Society and the Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil (OAB)in partnership with the and Lex Anglo-Brasil.It began in November 2014 with a group of Brazilian lawyers participating in a four-week programme in London, which included a short bespoke academic programme at BPP Law School, placement in solicitors' firm and barristers' chambers and a series of legal seminars. The programme has since seen two groups of young barristers head to Brazil for placements in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro and a further group of young Brazilian lawyers come to London in 2016.

This year we are delighted to be extending the programme to young Colombian and Mexican lawyers. Theprogramme aims to raise the lawyers’ understanding and awareness of how the English legal systems operates, how the legal profession in England and Wales functions and how to work most effectively with solicitors and barristers.

The Bar Council’s International Committee is seeking barristers’ chambers willing to host these lawyers for one or twoweeks, from 7 – 18 May 2018.

Interested chambers must have an international element to their practice, and should be able to offer at least one mentor to guide the lawyer through their placement. Placements are similar in substance a mini pupillage and should include some of the following elements:

  • Visiting different types of court
  • An insight into case management
  • Discussion of ethics, code of conduct and some of the challenges of practice
  • Introduction to the operation of chambers
  • The opportunity to read and research and do written work
  • Participation in meetings, conferences and chambers social events

If you are interested in hosting a lawyer, please complete the below form and send it to Kathy Wong by EOB Friday 2 March.
