Job Title:Research Support Officer

Salary:£22,029 - £26,274 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience. Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance.

Contract Status:This post is available from 1 August 2015or as soon as possible thereafter and will be offered on a fixed-term contract for one year

Hours of Work:37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday

Location:Mathematical Sciences Building

Reporting to:Research and Business Development Manager

Purpose of the New Role:

The purpose of the role is to provide general research support to the School. This will include a large component of project management for two new research grants, organisation of workshops and conferences, pre- and post-award administration, identifying and disseminating funding opportunities to academic staff and secretarial duties for staff.

Main Responsibilities / % time per year
1. / Provide project management support for two large research grants
-Overall responsibility for effective day-to-day running of the projects
-Responsibility for effective communication and reporting for a national and international consortium
-Organise local project activities and oversee activities managed by other partners / 40%
2. / Provide post-award administration support
-Liaise with Research and Graduate Services (RGS)
-Liaise with partner Schools and departments
-Run regular reports for academic staff
-Keep detailed records of all awards
-Advise staff on allowable spends / 10%
3. / Organise workshops, study groups and other activities for the School
-To include arranging venue, catering, arranging materials, liaising with participants and speakers, etc.
-Ensure University policies and procedures are followed
-Work closely with the Research and Business Development Manager and the other Research Support Officer to ensure an efficient service is provided and duties are shared appropriately / 10%
4. / Manage the grant submission process for awards under £100k in value
-Disseminate information
-Liaise with funders, RGS and staff
-Provide costings using the University pFACT software / 10%
5. / Identify and promote opportunities for knowledge transfer
-Provide regular updates to staff
-Identify new opportunities and update regular ones
-Meet with staff to provide targeted support
-Work closely with the Research and Business Development Manager to encourage applications / 5%
6. / Support promotion and development of School Research Groups and University Research Priority Areas
-Encourage intra- and inter-disciplinary working
-Promote calls and activities linked to the Priority Areas
-Liaise regularly with leaders of Priority Areas to identify opportunities / 5%
7. / Provide secretarial support for the School
-Work with Research Board to set meeting agenda, prepare papers and minute meetings
-Type examination papers, action mark input and carry out other examination duties as required
-Provide administrative support to designated members of academic staff
-Communicate and work effectively with the support team / 20%

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

Essential / Desirable
Qualifications/ Education / Educated to A level standard with GCSEs in both English and Mathematics.
Track record of relevant administrative experience. / Degree, qualification in mathematics or similar quantitative subject.
Skills/Training / Excellent organisational skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Excellent IT skills to include MS Office.
Ability to maintain confidentiality. / Programming skills, experience in LaTeX.
Experience / Research project management experience
Proven track record of managing own work. / Awareness of the challenges faced in a higher education environment, and an understanding of the key working relationships across a University.

Decision Making

i)taken independently by the role holder

-Effectively manage own time and the work of the Principal Investigators on the projects.
-Make decisions on the most efficient way to organise project activities, communicate with partners and keep records of decisions/feedback/activity logs.
-Respond to enquiries regarding policy and procedures affecting the project.

ii)taken in collaboration with others

-Work with the other Research Support Officer and the Research and Business Development Manager to efficiently allocate tasks.
-Support the Research Board and Director of Research in preparation of agenda and in following up on action points.
-Report to the funding bodies as required for the projects managed by the role-holder.

iii)referred to the appropriate line manager (please name) by the role holder

-Problems of a financial or administrative nature to be referred to the Research and Business Development Manager
-Issues with partners to be referred to the Research and Business Development Manager
-Problems of a personal nature to be referred to the School Manager

Additional Information

The role holder will be based with the School of Mathematical Sciences, but will be expected to liaise regular with staff in RGS, based in King’s Meadow Campus. Partners of the projects are based elsewhere in UK and Europe, and the role-holder will be expected to visit these groups when required for events and meetings.
