During the semester, we will visit several construction sites to conduct research studies, discussions and on-site observation of projects under construction.

These construction site visits will be scheduled outside of class time on Saturday mornings. We will announce these field trips in the class syllabus.

G. Students with Disabilities:

Any student requesting academic accommodations based upon a disability is required to register with Disability Services and Programs (DSP) each semester. A letter of verification for approved accommodations can be obtained from DSP. Please be sure the letter is delivered to me as early in the semester as possible. Your letter must be specific as to the nature of the accommodations granted. DSP is located in STU 301 and is open from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. The telephone number for DSP is (213) 740-0776.

H. Academic Integrity:

The University, as an instrument of learning, is predicated on the existence of an element of integrity. As members of the academic community, faculty, students and administrative officials share the responsibility for maintaining this environment. Faculty have the primary responsibility for establishing and maintaining an atmosphere and attitude of academic integrity such that the learning environment may flourish in an open and honest manner. Students share this responsibility for maintaining standards of academic performance and classroom behavior conductive to the learning process. Administrative officials are responsible for the establishment and maintenance of procedures to support and enforce those academic standards. Thus, the entire University

community bears the responsibility for maintaining an environment of integrity and for taking the appropriate action to sanction individuals involved in a violation. When there is a clear indication that any individual is unwilling or unable to support these standards, the individual should not be allowed to remain at the University.

Academic dishonest includes:

a.  Examination behavior – any use of external assistance during an examination or quiz shall be considered academically dishonest unless expressly permitted by the teacher.

b.  Fabrication – any intentional falsification or invention of data or citation in an academic exercise will be considered a violation of academic integrity.

c.  Plagiarism – the appropriation and subsequent passing off of another’s ideas, words, or work as one’s one. If the ideas, words or work or another are used, acknowledgement of the original source must be made through recognized referencing practices.

d.  The use of quizzes or homework assignments from previous classes or previous semesters is strictly prohibited. Students using quizzes or homework assignments from previous classes or semesters shall receive a grade of F for the class.

e.  Other types of Academic Dishonesty – submitting a paper or assignment written by or obtained from another, using a paper or essay in more than one class without the teacher’s express permission, obtaining a copy of an examination or quiz in advance without the knowledge and consent of the teacher, changing academic records outside of normal procedures and/or petitions, using another person to complete homework assignments, take-home exams or chapter projects without the knowledge and consent of the teacher.

The use of unauthorized material or communication with a fellow student or students for quizzes and examinations, attempting to benefit from work of another student, past or present or similar behavior that defeats the intent of the quiz or examination, is unacceptable to the University. It is often difficult to distinguish between a culpable act and inadvertent behavior resulting from nervous tensions accompanying quizzes and examinations. However, where a clear violation has occurred, the instructor may disqualify the student’s work as unacceptable and assign a failing mark for the assignment, quiz or examination.

I.  Distance Education Network (DEN) Class:

1.  This class is a DEN class with both in-class students and DEN students taking the same class.

2.  DEN students may access the class in real time and in-class students may access the class beginning about 15 minutes after the end of the class.

3.  Only DEN students may take the weekly quizzes online. In-class students must take the weekly quizzes in class.

4.  Both in-class students and DEN students will be taking the weekly quizzes at the start of each class. DEN students will be taking the weekly quizzes online thru DEN with the weekly quizzes available from 6:40 PM to 7:05 PM each week.

5.  In-class students will turn-in the weekly assignments at the start of each class. DEN students will email me their weekly assignments by no later than 4:30 PM (PST) every Thursday and shall use my build-laccd email address.

6.  In-class students will receive the previous week’s quiz and assignment at the start of each class. DEN students will be sent the previous week’s quiz and assignment from DEN.

7.  In-class students and DEN students may contact me using either my build-laccd email address Monday thru Friday or my USC email address on Saturday and Sunday.

8.  DEN students are welcome to attend the three jobsite tours with the in-class students. If a DEN student cannot attend the jobsite tours, DEN students are required to make three jobsite tours of projects in their area similar in size to the projects we will be visiting.
