The crankshaft, which converts the reciprocating motion of the piston to rotating motion, must resist the bending stresses caused by the connecting rod thrust when the piston is at top dead centre. Then the maximum gas pressure acts straight down on the crankpin and tends to bend the shaft between the adjacent bearings. The crankshaft must also withstand the torsional forces produced by the change of speed. Medium speed engines have crankshaft usually solid forged, i.e. made from a single piece, while slow speed engine crankshafts are mostly of semi-built design with crankpins and webs forged or cast in one piece and shrunk onto the journals. The main bearing shells are made of steel with a lining of bearing metal which can be white metal, copper-lead or aluminium-tin alloy. A thin flash of lead or indium is often added to provide an anti-corrosion layer.

The propulsion system is what actually drives a motor yacht ______the water.Propulsion systems can be categorised ______several principal types. Most power boats are fitted with conventional shaft-and-propeller drives. ______these boats the propeller shaft has to be angled downward as it passes through the hull. Because of this angle, the thrust ______the propeller is partly directed ______trying to lift the stern instead of pushing the boat forward. In outboard drives, the drive shaft is taken directly ______the vertical engine crankshaft and then redirected through a 90-degree gearing ______the propeller shaft ______the bottom of the lower unit. With stern-drive propulsion, the so-called Z-drive, the shaft inside the leg has to pass ______two 90-degree gearing ______the engine and the propeller shaft.
