1. Directions for creating a map for your school’s local community (i.e., a one-mile radius around your school:
  1. Click here ( to access Free Map Tools.
  2. Scroll down to “Options.”
  3. Input “1” for “miles” in Radius Distance.
  4. Add your school’s address after “Input Point: (2) Place radius by location name.”

  1. Select “Draw Radius.”

  1. Click “Map Options” and select “Full Screen.”

  1. Zoom to display your radius with adequate map detail and perform a screen capture. For directions on how to perform a screen capture, click here ( and select the tab appropriate for you (e.g., Windows, Mac, etc.).
  2. Paste the map into your assessment template.

2. Directions for creating a map of an extended community:
  1. Click here (maps.google.com) to access Google Maps.
  2. Input your school’s address in the white search bar.
  3. Select the blue button with the magnifying glass.

  1. Zoom to display the area with adequate map detail and perform a screen capture. For directions on how to perform a screen capture, click here ( and select the tab appropriate for you (e.g., Windows, Mac, etc.).
  2. When you paste your map into your assessment template, if possible, trim the edges to fit the estimated boundaries of your extended community.

3. Directions for using census data to inform the boundaries you set for your extended community
  1. Click here ( to access the Census Factfinder website.
  2. Scroll down to “Address Search,” which is marked with a street sign icon. Click the words, “street address.”

  1. The “Select Geographies” search box should pop up. If it does not, click “Geographies” on the left-hand navigation menu.

  1. Type the address of your school (or an address in any area you wish to map), and click “Go.”
  2. Your search returns should appear as a long list. Skim the “Geography Type” column to find “Census Tract.” Select that entry by clicking on the corresponding entry in the “Geography Name” column.

  1. Your selection should now appear in the “Your Selections” box at the top-left corner of the page.
  2. Close the pop-up box in which you've entered addresses by clicking the gray "CLOSE X" that appears at the top-right of the pop-up.

  1. You should now see a table of data sets for your chosen census tracts. When you click an entry from the “Table, File, or Document Title” column (e.g., RACE, LANGUAGE SPOKEN AT HOME, EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT, etc.), you will gain access to that data for your chosen census tract.
