Course Description:

This course meets two semesters of the twelfth grade English requirement, and as a member of the student body at Chatsworth High School, students are required to master to the best of their abilities the Common Core Standards that apply to this English course. The standards can be found at www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy, specifically pdf formatted Reading Standards (pages 35, 38 and 40), Writing Standards (pages 41, 45, 46 and 47), Speaking and Listening Standards (page 48 and 50), and Language Standards (pages 51, 54 and 55).
Required Class Supplies
The following are the few items that students must provide themselves to complete class work (textbooks, reading material and dictionaries are provided by the school):
· pen/pencil
· paper, 8.5”x11” college ruled
Grading Criteria
Grades are calculated every five weeks and all points (class engagement and course work-see below) are cumulative. Depending on how much points have been assigned for each grading period, points are totaled and a traditional grading scale is applied to determine a student's grade: 90%+=A, 80%+=B, 70%+=C, 60%+=D and 59% and below equals a F.
Class Engagement
Actively engaged in class is a necessity in order to be successful. Class engagement consists of having textbook and necessary class supplies, listening, speaking, asking questions, reading and being actively involved (independently or collaboratively) in class. Points assigned for class engagement will vary in points (determined by teacher).
Course Work
Course work is expected to be completed consistently and effectively in order to earn a passing or high grade. Course work consists of the following: vocabulary, note taking, answering questions and short and long response compositions. Points assigned course work will vary in points (determined by teacher), and only some work will be submitted for grading (determined by teacher), but all work is still expected to be engaged in and completed.
Due Date/Missed Work
Work is usually due the day assigned in class, and no late work accepted unless arranged with teacher, Work missed due to absences must be made up in a timely manner (arrange with teacher). Class work is documented on the school's website, www.chatsworthhs.org.
Plagiarism
No credit given to work determined to be plagiarized (copied from another student or sources), both to copier and copied.
Work Habits/Cooperation
Students also earn a letter grade in work habits and cooperation based on the following criteria:
E=Excellent: student is consistently on task and consistently follows/adheres to directions/expectations.
S=Satisfactory: student is usually on task and to a large extent follows/adheres to directions/expectations.
U=Unsatisfactory: student is more than not off task and to a large degree does not follow/adhere to directions/expectations.
Class Expectations/Rules
Students are expected to adhere to the following guidelines:
· Attend class and arrive on time with all needed supplies.
· Behave appropriately in class.
· Pay attention to teacher.
· Participate in class lessons/activities.
· Complete work to best of abilities and submit on time.
· Keep work area organized and clean.
· Adhere to school rules.
· Treat all others appropriately.
· Use hall pass to exit class.
· Follow directions of substitute teachers.
