Olly Stykuc-Dean– Introduced his role within the Strategic Commissioning team at Buckinghamshire County Council, which covers Prevention and Early Intervention for all age adults.
There is a major project underway to design a new model of social care aimed at improving the relationship between Social Workers and their clients. It is anticipated that within the next 23 months all Social Workers will have undergone a review of the way that they assess clients’ needs and re-trainedto follow a much more multi-disciplinarily approach.
This is a major transformational piece of work, and a pilot of the new way of working is underway in Amersham and High Wycombe, Carers Bucks and Bucks MIND are collaboratively supporting this projectwith the view to completion in April 2017.
SA commented that Ann Whitely has been attending meetings with Community Practice workers – finding out what people need.
AS agreed that a person centred assessment will be an improvement and deliver early intervention – getting the right help for the client at the beginning of their contact with the service.
VR welcomed the new ethos, as currently clients often struggle to access Mental Health services, and are oftenreferred for treatment, therapies and activities that aren’t always needed or that the client will benefit from.
ACTION: OSD to provide feedback to the Board on the progress of the pilot on the new model of social care.
Matt Knight (Wycombe Mind)
It’s 25 years since the St Johns’ Hospital in Stone closed in the late 1980’s, which at the time created a great deal of anxiety for service users, their families and also the wider local community.
Upon reflection, the responses to care in the community has resulted in many mental health settings closing, but at the same time some have remained open, and evolved into providing effective mental health therapy and support services.
As an experiment a Sunday service has recently been set up, which provides an informal advocacy service, support around Housing, Benefits and ESA appeals. Currently there are 40-50 members.
Caroline Hart (All age Mental Health Service Commissioner – AV & CCCG)
The Mental Health Crisis Care Concordat is a national agreement between services and agencies involved in the care and support of people in crisis. It sets out how organisations will work together better to make sure that people get the help they need when they are having a mental health crisis. For further information please visit
Jack Workman will be leading on our area’s Crisis Care Concordat, and the Mental Health Partnership Board can feed through any issues they feel need to be addressed.
4 / Shared Lives Presentation – Rowena Razzaq (Shared Lives Scheme Manager)
The Shared Lives scheme in Buckinghamshireis provided by ategi - a charitable organisation which provides care and support for vulnerablepeople aged 18+, including the elderly, who may for example, have a Learning Disability or be suffering with Dementia or wish to leave home to gain or share independence. Fostered children when approaching 18 years can be assisted by Shared Lives.
The carers they take on are assessed thoroughly for 10-12 weeks, during which time a panel will decide if they are suitable to be accepted. Carers do receive an allowance for sharing their homes with Shared Lives clients.
Carers are then carefully matched with clients, taking into consideration what is best for the client and carers, in order for the placement to be sustainable for both parties.
Ategi carry out monthly contact visits with carers and review with the service user. Once the client moves in there are another 6 weekly visits.
They offer long term or short term placements, and also provide mentoring with practical tasks such as providing support to a client looking for work, going to the gym etc.
There are currently 39 long term clients, but there are also carer vacancies. Rowena offered to send out monthly carer and vacancy updates to Board members.
Rowena was asked whether clients can be placed directly from Hospital – not at the moment, but could do in the future.
EZ asked what happens if carers decide that they don’t want to continue – if possible a linked relative may be able to help. Family members of the client can also visit. Long term carers get 28 days leave per year.
