QUEER YOUTH SCENE INTERN

The Queer Youth Scene program of the DiversityCenter works to promote a safe environment for LGBTQ youth in today’s society. It offers many support services and resources to youth throughout Santa CruzCounty to encourage them to become more comfortable with their gender identity, sexual orientation, and who they are as a person.

To help these youth the Queer Youth Scene is offering one internship beginning in August or September and lasting between 3 months to 1 year. The internship would be held at the DiversityCenter, which is located at 1117 Soquel Ave, Santa CruzCA95062.This position will have flexible hours and workdays and would offer between 10-20 hours of work per week. Course credit would be given at the college’s discretion.

The internship would require outreach to the community, coordinating events and activities, computer literacy, especially with regards to Microsoft Word and Excel, organizational skills, and an open-mind and an eagerness to advocate for queer youth in our community. DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT PEER ADVISORWomen's Crisis Support~Defensa de Mujeres

A State Certified Peer Counselor Training will start March 18th throughout May 6th, every Wednesdays' 6:00-8:30 PM (Aptos Cabrillo College) and Saturdays 8:30-3:30 PM (Watsonville).
Volunteer Peer Counselor's help our agency provide competent services to survivors of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. The comprehensive training that participants receive will provide them with tools to assist survivors. Some topics are: crisis intervention & legal assistance, dynamics of domestic violence and sexual assault, chemical dependency, child abuse, mandated reporting, teen sexual abuse, district attorney’s office, sexual assault procedures, mental health, trauma informed and more. Participants receive their certification, plus gain quality peer-counseling experience through the training and by volunteering. Volunteer opportunities include:
Crisis Line Worker: Provide peer-counseling support and referrals to callers. CI-Legal Volunteer Advocate: Assist clients through crisis intervention and with restraining orders when necessary. Perform clerical tasks. Children’s Support Group Facilitator: Co-facilitate support group for witnesses of domestic violence. Teen Support Group Co-Facilitator: Support teens that are witnessing or experiencing domestic violence. Sexual Assault Support Group Co-Facilitator: Provide direct services to clients of sexual assault.
