6. How did water arrive on Earth enough to fill the oceans? Explain the two leading explanations, and the evidence to support them.

One theory is that H2O was locked in the rocks and material that formed the earth. When volcanoes erupted, as they did almost constantly during Early Earth, they sent out lots of steam that eventually filled the atmosphere and came down as rain when Earth started to cool. Another theory is that H2O came in the form of ice in comets and asteroids that bombarded early Earth. Evidence is in the form of the proportion of isotopes of Hydrogen found in the ice of comets and asteroids, compared to the proportion on Earth. Heavy Hydrogen has an extra neutron, but is rare. Evidence is also found in rocks from the Moon that have some H2O locked in them, just like early Earth.

7. What is special about water’s specific heat, and how does it affect climate? Water has a very high specific heat, meaning it takes a lot of heat energy to change its temperature. This means that climate is moderated by large bodies of water, like oceans. So, places near the oceantend to have warmer winters and cooler summers than places at similar latitudes but inland.

8. Imagine that a rogue H2O molecule was part of a gang In South Carolina that destroyed homes, farms, offices, and stores while also causing the deaths of wild animals, farm animals, pets, and people. Using a separate sheet of paper, prepare a poster warning people about the dangers of this molecule when in an unruly gang.

Draw a wanted poster, after all, floods and tsunamis have killed lots of people, including many in the Carolinas after Hurricane Matthew.
