Re: 2016 Scholastic Assessment Test Results

Keene High School continues to have a high percentage of graduates who participate in the SAT Program. 63% of the students who graduated in June of 2016 took the SATs one or more times. This percentage is slightly lower than years past and may be a reflection of post-secondary plans and some colleges moving towards optional score reporting.

This report summarizes score information for seniors who took the SAT at any time during their high school years through January 2016. If a student took the SAT more than once during this timeframe, the most recent score is used.

Points to Consider:

• Just over 1.6 million of the graduating class of 2016 graduating class took the SAT. This is consistent with the number of seniors who took the test in 2015.

• The SAT reflects how well students can apply the reading, mathematics, and writing skills and knowledge they have learned. It is important to remember that these abilities are developed over a long period of time, beginning well before high school. Activities and experiences outside of school may be at least as important as those in school in the development of these abilities.

• SAT averages will vary from year-to-year depending upon such factors as the overall strength of a given senior class, percentage of test takers, etc. KHS is reflective of this trend. KHS continues to score above the national average in all areas and above the state average for public schools in the area of math. Although the KHS writing scores fell below the state average they remain above the average when looking at the national score.

• Please note the effect that students from nonpublic high schools have on increasing the overall state average scores. This should not be surprising as these schools feature selective admission patterns and basically accept only those students who fit such criteria. As in the past, New Hampshire seniors enrolled in nonpublic high schools comprise approximately 17-19% of the SAT test takers.

• Since not all students in a high school take the SAT this information should only be used to help students make decisions about their own academic preparation. The College Board discourages school districts from using this information to compare or evaluate teachers, schools, districts, states or other educational units. The proportion of students taking the test is a most important factor to consider when attempting to interpret SAT scores.

Beginning in the fall of 2017 the report will use information from the new SAT whick took effect in March 2016. The redesigned SAT will report the following

·  Total Score (400-1600)

·  Section scores in Evidence-Based Reading/Writing and Math

·  Cross –Test Scores in Analysis in Science and Analysis in History/Social Studies

·  Test Scores in Reading, Writing and Language, and Math

·  Subscores in Words in Context, Command of Evidence, Expression of Ideas, Standard English Conventions,

Heart of Algebra, Passport of Advanced Mathematics, and Problem Solving and Data Analysis

These reported scores are intended to provide additional information about student achievement and readiness that will convey a cohesive profile of a student’s college and career readiness.
