Unit Summary
Students will learn to swim and learn about water safety regarding boating safety, skill development, medical emergencies, and supervision around water. Activities using canoes, swimming drills, and videos will focus on framed questions. Peer evaluations, self evaluations, and skills testing will help students meet self determined goals.

Students will swim 25 yds of any of the 6 recognized swimming strokes.
Students will negotiate a capsized canoe event in shallow and deep water.
Students will particpate in discussion concernng medical emergencies and supervision around water

Assessment Summary
Our main assessment tool will be a checklist. The checklist will start from basic water skills to advanced.
Weekly peer and self evaluations, along with group discussion will determine if the students progress is on track to reach predetermined goals. Students will assess one another weekly and I will assess their assessment.

Prerequisite Skills
Students must have passed a level 2 swim class of American Red Cross standard or have the ability to float on front an back for 5 seconds
Instructional Procedures
Week 1: Overview the entire unit. Self evaluation of current knowledge and skill. Discussion and brainstorm of Essential question. Group discussion and goal setting by students that is analyzed by instructor. During the week students practice skills and evaluate each other via check lists. End of week one wraps with a guided discussion of Drowning and possible causes and prevention measures.
Use seeing reason tool during first week.
Week 2: Oral review and discussion of week 1. Students share goals and demonstrate progress for peer evaluation. During the week students practice skills and evaluate each other via check lists. End of week wraps with a self evaluation from each student on same check list. Video of boater safety is followed by group discussion and questioning of how it relates to essential and unit question.
Week 3: Oral review and discussion of weeks 1 & 2. Students review goals and demonstrate progress for peer evaluation. During the week students practice skills and evaluate each other via check lists.
End of the week wraps with self evaluation of progress by each student using skills check list. Brainstorm session of water and medical emergencies focuses on framed questions.
Week 4: Oral review and discussion of weeks 1,2, & 3. Students adjust goals and demonstrate progress for peer evaluation. During the week students refine skills and evaluate each other via check list. Group discussion focuses on techniques that have been used to create skills progress. Week wraps with self evaluation of skills and gained knowledge. Instructor evaluates the self evaluation for exit discussion.
Exit skills test performed per Red Cross evaluation.
Accommodations for Differentiated Instruction
Resource Student / Extra pool time will be offered to student who struggle. Classroom computers and video are set up in adjacent room for use as needed. Students are grouped according to skill level and background knowledge discovered on day one.
Nonnative English Speaker / The use ESL tutors and dual-language dictionaries will be used as needed.
Gifted Student / Websites such as www.floswimming.org will be offered for research and exploration.
Advanced strokes and techniques will be introduced to those who advance beyond the offered curriculum.
These students will also be used in the instructor role to help other students who need further help.
