OPERATIONAL DEFINITIONS
Research Associate is a person who possesses the qualifications and expertise to conduct research activities in collaboration with faculty members and other researchers. The primary responsibility of the Research Associate is to carry out research and/or scholarship. In doing so, duties may include supervision of other researchers and technical personnel and participation in various aspects of student research. Research Associates will normally hold a doctoral degree or have equivalent qualifications and experience.
Professional Associate is a senior researcher or scholar with an established record who conducts research or scholarly activities independently and/or in association with academic colleagues. The primary responsibility of the Professional Associate is to carry out research and/or scholarship. In doing so, duties may include direction of other researchers and technical personnel and participation in various aspects of student research. Professional Associates will normally hold a doctoral degree or have equivalent qualifications and experience
Post-Doctoral Fellow (PDF) is a scholar with a doctoral degree who (i) has been awarded, in competition, support in the form of a fellowship, or (ii) has been supported on a research grant. A post-doctoral designation is for a limited period of time and is designed to further the knowledge of fellows in teaching, advanced study or research through collaboration with faculty.
Visiting Academic is a person who is appointed for a term or terms not to exceed two years, to teach or conduct research at the University of Manitoba while holding a permanent appointment at another institution, Canadian or foreign, to which the person will return at the end of the visiting term.
Research Affiliate is an individual who normally holds a full-time academic appointment with the University of Manitoba or with another university and who, as a result of his/her research expertise and achievements, desires an affiliation with a Research Centre/Institute which would be of mutual benefit to both the Research Centre/Institute and the individual. There is no salary associated with the appointment. The individual is expected to contribute to and share in the research activities of the Research Centre/Institute but will not normally have any assigned duties associated with the appointment. In the event that duties are assigned, they must be of a vary limited nature and have the approval of the home faculty/school dean/director. Research affiliates will be expected to hold a doctoral degree or have equivalent qualifications and experience.
Professional Affiliate is an individual who is primarily employed by an organization, institution or company other than the University and who, as a result of that employment, desires an affiliation with the University which would be of mutual benefit to both the University and the individual. There is no salary associated with the appointment. The individual is expected to contribute to and share in the research activities of the University but will not normally have any duties associated with the appointment. In the event duties are assigned, they must be of a very limited nature. Professional Affiliates will normally be expected to hold a doctoral degree or have equivalent qualifications and experience.
