Dear Downey Parent/Guardian in Grades 3-5,
I am excited to be launching our 9th year of Math League at Downey School! The Downey School Math League Team is an exciting opportunity for students in grades 3-5 to compete against their grade level peers from across the district in a competitive environment in the spring. Students who join the Math League Team should have grade level math skills, the ability to stretch their thinking, and are excited about working with their peers to collaboratively and cooperatively solve some very difficult math problems.
The Math League team practices will take place before school from 8:00 a.m.-8:45 a.m. one time per week from November through April. Parents of participants will be asked to coach the students on a regular basis; a schedule will be created once students are signed up. Please know that as a coach, you are expected to facilitate conversations among students, you are not expected to teach them. If for some reason you are not available to coach, please contact me, to work out a plan. A parent information session regarding coaching will take place onFriday, November 3rd at 9:00 a.m. in the Downey cafeteria.
In order to volunteer you need to have a CORI form on file, within the past 3 years, with the Downey School. Please check with Diane Carde () on the status of your CORI. I have attached a CORI form for you. Once you complete, please attach a copy of your driver’s license and return it to the office.
On the next page you will find more detailed information regarding Math League practices. Please encourage your child to participate! There is a $40 fee to cover the cost of t-shirts for the Math League meet, and a pizza party at the end of the season. Please note: morning snacks will not be provided. If your child needs a snack please send in a nut-free snack. Please contact me directly if a scholarship is needed to cover the cost of this activity.
