Position purpose

The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics is a young but rapidly expanding department being viewed as a strategic growth area of the Faculty. As such, expanding course offerings to include a new Masters level Dietetics program and an undergraduate Nutritional Science course aims to complement the existing Bachelor program in Nutrition and Dietetics and its Honours degree to provide a pathway for students into higher degrees by research.

The Associate Professor will make a significant contribution to all activities of the Department and play a significant role within the field of Nutrition and Dietetics. More specifically, the Associate Professor will

take on the responsibility for the Sports Nutrition, develop educational offerings in sports nutrition and/or dietetics, and is expected to play an active role in the development of a new research intensive Masters program in Sports Nutrition. The role will encompass team leadership, the mentoring of staff and early career researchers, supervising postgraduate students and the building of partnerships with external funding bodies including the government and industry.

§  Reporting line: The position reports to the Head of Department, Nutrition & Dietetics.

§  Supervisory responsibilities: will be provide a leadership role within the Department.

The School of Clinical Sciences is one of the nine schools of the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at Monash University. Most of the school’s research and teaching activities are based off the main university campus at Monash Medical Centre (MMC) Clayton and Notting Hill although activities also extend to a number of external sites including Dandenong, Casey, Moorabbin and Frankston Hospitals and Monash Health's Kingston Centre. The school also has established links with other parts of the faculty and other Monash faculties. MMC Clayton is a major teaching hospital for Monash students. The school has a strong focus on delivery of the undergraduate curriculum to medical and nutrition and dietetics students across a range of clinical sites. The school also provides postgraduate teaching and training in embryology.

Basic, clinical and translation research activities are undertaken by the school’s clinical departments: Medicine, Nutrition and Dietetics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics and Surgery which are embedded within Monash Health. The school’s researchers collaborate with relevant clinical areas in the hospital and a range of partners in health services. They also part of the Translational Research Precinct, Monash Partners and the Hudson Institute.

Research, teaching and training

·  the conduct of high quality research, including, where appropriate, leadership of a large research team.

·  the conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops;

·  the development of and responsibility for the Sports nutrition;

·  supervision of Honours or postgraduate research projects;

·  provision of leadership in the management and planning of the Department;

Key selection criteria

1.  PhD in relevant area

2.  Professional accreditation in sports dietetics or nutrition;

3.  Proven excellence in teaching with significant experience in the initiation and development of course material, course coordination and preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars;

4.  A proven track record and commitment and passion for translating practice skills in the academic environment in a leadership role;

5.  National reputation for outstanding research including a good publication record in high-quality refereed journals or equivalent in addition to a strong track record in obtaining external funding;

6.  High-level interpersonal skills and proven ability to establish a good working relationship with colleagues and students and to develop and maintain strong professional links with professional clinical partners and the community;

7.  Ability to plan, organise and achieve work targets, sometimes in demanding circumstances and work harmoniously and constructively with academic colleagues, other University staff and external stakeholders;

8.  Highly developed skills in leadership, networking and management;

9.  Ability to promote the discipline of Sports Nutrition both within the University and to the greater community.
