October 2017

Welcome back to everyone for the start of the Third term, it is lovely to note that we have approx. 40 new members this term so a special welcome to you and we hope you enjoy your time with friends at the school.

NAME BADGES

Please wear your name badges that have been provided upon enrolment, this helps tutors know the members of their classes and it allows other members of the school to place a name to a face. On the reverse of the name badge would you please provide the full name and telephone number of someone you would prefer the school to contact in the event of an accident or incident.

BOOK NOOK

Thanks for continued support of our Book Nook. We have had donations of new/different books for readers, please also remember to return these when you have read them – so we have a bigger variety to offer our members. Spring cleaning time – so maybe you will come across books in good order that have been printed up to 25 years ago, and have no further use for. We would love to add them to our collection.

CALENDARS

Calendars for 2018 are available from the office, there are several designs and two different sizes. They have proved very popular so don’t miss out on that Christmas gift for the person who has everything and is difficult to buy for, or just for yourself. Meanwhile you can have a “sneak peek” at designs available by checking out our website www.lss.org.au .

MAGAZINE

The School Magazine for 2017 is nearly ready for printing, it will be available at the end of year luncheon but also next week from the office. The magazine has a nominal cost of $3 which helps defray the printing cost of this very fine production which you will greatly enjoy.

REGISTRATION DAY

Registration day was not completely uneventful. We encountered a couple of minor problems which will be addressed ready for next registration day. There is a total of 455 members of the school community as this newsletter goes to print.

PLEASE IDENTIFY YOUR CAR

Thank you to those members who have purchased identifiable stickers from the office for the princely sum of $2. These help us to determine cars which are illegally parked in the LINC car park and so we can give them a warning notice.

PARKING

It wouldn’t be a Newsletter without an article on the Parking would it?

We always reiterate information regarding the parking – no doubt there will always be a problem of one sort or another.

The main things to take note of are:

1.  Please park “prettily”, in other words do not obstruct other people’s cars so that they cannot leave. There is not an extra corner parking space near the pedestrian gate, this is an object of your imagination – it is a walking space for pedestrians.

2.  Please enter and leave the car park at no more than 20 kmh, and if walking – please watch your step and look where you are walking.

3.  Please leave the car park after your class or classes in a timely fashion so that others who may need to park will have the opportunity to do so.

4.  Please try and car share or use other transport if convenient

5.  If you have a class which is “off campus” could you be mindful that others need to park their cars too, and try and park in another area where it is both convenient and safe to leave your vehicle, thereby freeing up space for others who are actually attending classes in the school building.

SO YOU HAVE HEARD THE ONE ABOUT THE DRIVER STOPPED BY THE POLICE FOR GOING THE WRONG WAY?

The policeman says – “Sir, did you realise that you are not driving in the direction the arrows are pointing.” The man replies “Arrows? – I didn’t even see the Indians!”

It has been noted that some drivers are driving out of the car park in a clockwise direction against the arrows that are painted on the ground. PLEASE move your car in an anti -clockwise direction when leaving the car park – if we are all going the right way, that is “round in circles” it will avoid accidents (hopefully).

PLEASE LOOK AT THIS PHOTO WHICH SHOULD HELP YOU UNDERSTAND THE ISSUE

USED STAMPS

Thanks once again to those people who have donated used stamps and old albums to Church Missions through Carol Titmus. Even if it is only a few stamps which don’t seem much to you, you would be surprised how they accumulate and the Uniting Church is very grateful for our support for this idea.

DAY TOUR 2 “SCOUTING THE TAMAR”

FRIDAY 9TH FEBRUARY, 2018.

DEPARTS GLENARA LAKES 8:45 FOR 9:00 – RETURN 5:00PM

This is the last summer tour for 2018, and is an interesting one closer to home. There are some seats still available on this tour. Don’t put it off, term end will soon be here and tickets must be paid for soon.

The strawberry farm at Dilston sounds like somewhere we can kill two birds with one stop! Yes, morning tea and picking a few strawberries to take home sounds like a good use of time and energy.

Over the Batman Bridge, and heading north we will travel through the deserted area of Yorktown, a town which was the site of the first attempt to establish a British presence in Northern Tasmania.

Further north, we will take a look around Greens Beach (anyone for a paddle in the sea) before the journey back to Beaconsfield. Lunch time!! Yes an all important part of our day’s outing. At the time of printing this, Joanne is working on two options; let’s have a surprise! After dining, we will pay a visit to the Beaconsfield Mine Museum for a guided tour.

Mid-afternoon we will travel a short distance back to the Rosevears Winery. The West Tamar has some very reputable vineyards and this is one of them. There will be time to taste and perhaps make a purchase before we head back to the Glenara base. The cost for this comprehensive day trip including morning tea, lunch, guided tour, tasting and coach is $85 per person.

Please support the day trips mentioned, there is an old saying “if you don’t use it, you’ll lose it”.

A lot of time, and effort in planning has been undertaken by Alan and the staff of Franklins Coaches, so if you were thinking of a lovely day trip on BOTH sides of the river – get in now and secure your tickets.

The Cost is $490 total – if you need further details contact Alan Jones on 63443330 or 0419 104 614.

TUTORS MEETING

It is disappointing to note that even though you are specifically requested to attend the Tutor’s Meeting, there are still some who are not getting “IT”. We ask you to attend so that you can hear any information relevant to the running of your class, get your list of class members, have your say on issues affecting your tutoring perhaps.

FIRE EVACUATION

It is likely there will be a fire evacuation procedure sometime this term. Details have been explained by your tutors and there is information on the wall in each room. Vicki Wilson is our Chief Fire Warden, but in the event of a fire occurring in Vicki’s absence, perhaps after 12.30 p.m, when she leaves or at any other time, the responsibility of Fire Warden rests on the shoulders of the Tutor of each class. This role cannot be delegated to any other person, that person may not be there on that day.

FREE HEARING TESTS

We are seeking expressions of interest from people wishing to undertake a free hearing test to be held at the school possibly in Room 5 on Tuesday 21st November. This is a free hearing clinic, you are under no obligation to purchase any items to correct hearing, this is simply a test to check whether you may need some assistance to hear better. Please let Vicki know at the office if you would like to attend. A time will be advised in the next Newsletter.

END OF YEAR LUNCHEON

Tickets for this annual function will be available from next Monday from the office. Please secure your seat early as there is a catering limit by the ladies of the Holman Clinic ladies who always offer fine fare for you to enjoy. The cost is $35 per head, there is a choice of main dish and sweet and you can make your selection when paying for your ticket. There will be entertainment for you to enjoy on this one day of the year when we can get together socially. Please buy your ticket without delay.

PICNIC VENUES

During the summer break not only do we like to enjoy the wonderful trips arranged for us, we also like to enjoy a picnic. If you haven’t been to a picnic – please come along, dates and venues will be in the next newsletter. If you would like to offer your home and garden as a venue, we would love to hear from you. Some of our members have been very generous over past years offering their homes so we can meet socially during the summer break and we hope there are some others in the school community who can do likewise. What does being a host involve ? – nothing much you will be pleased to know. You merely need to provide a space where up to 30 people can sit, preferably with some shade, or umbrella cover in case the weather is inclement. There is nothing special that you have to provide, people bring their own chairs, their own picnic lunch and mug. We hope you as a host would have available tea or coffee, hot water, milk and sugar. These provisions can be sourced from the school “canteen” as well as an urn if desired. So there is no extra cost for you, we just want somewhere to get together and have a lovely few hours from 12 Noon. Please contact Bob Sievers on 6344 4787 if you would like to offer your space at your place.

ANIMALS IN SCHOOL GROUNDS

Please note everyone, that the grounds of the school and the inside of the building are not places for any of your animals most especially dogs. So don’t bring them to school. Moreover, don’t even bring them to school and leave them in the car while you attend your class – it’s against the rules we all have to abide by as tenants of the grounds and buildings.

SMILE AWHILE

There were three elderly sisters who all lived together in the same house.

The eldest sister went upstairs to run a bath, she put her foot in the water and then shouted out

“Was I getting into this bath, or getting out of it?”

One of the other sisters was sitting downstairs reading the newspaper and went to help. She began climbing the stairs but then shouted out

“Was I coming down the stairs or going up them?”

The youngest sister who was having a drink of tea in the kitchen sighed and muttered under her breath, “Goodness, I hope I never get that forgetful” and knocked on the wooden table for good measure.
