FREE Tax Preparation Services

My office has partnered again with the Louisville Asset Building Coalition to provide FREE tax preparation services for the 2012 tax year. At this time all appointments have been filled for Friday, March 22nd. You are welcome to call our office to be placed on the wait list if we have any cancellations. You are eligible if you earned $50,000 Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) or less in 2012 or if you quality for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). There are several FREE self file options available online for individuals/families that make $50,000 or less. Please click here to access those programs.

Also, the Clifton Christian Church, located at 131 Vernon Avenue, is offering FREE tax preparation on Wednesdays from Noon – 4:00 p.m. The service is geared towards low-income families and senior citizens. For more information call 896-0302.

21st Annual Easter Parade on Frankfort Avenue

The Frankfort Avenue Business Association (FABA) will host the 21st Annual Easter Parade on The Avenue on Saturday, March 30, 2013. The parade begins at 11:45amin front of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 2822 Frankfort Avenue, and will travel to Haldeman Avenue bringing free candy and Easter cheer to thousands of onlookers. The parade participants include: the "Cashdales from Check Into Cash" (a team of Clydesdale horses owned by Check Into Cash), the Shriner's, Louisville Bagpipe Band, Hwang's Martial Arts, the Talking Police Car, Wallie Moon's Bubble Truck, the Animal House Adoption Center, the Mounted Sherriff's Posse, antique cars and trucks, local dance teams and homemade floats of all kinds. This year's Grand Marshal is a group of top students from the Kentucky School for the Blind, who will be escorted through the parade in a carriage alongside the Easter Bunny. This event is free and welcomes families, children and pets to participate, and everyone is encouraged to dress in costume and bring their Easter baskets to be filled with free candy.

The "Good Ears" awards will be presented to the most creative float and the most outrageous Easter bonnet. The Judges station is located in front of the Irish Rover, 2319 Frankfort Avenue, and those who wish to be considered for the awards are asked to stop in front of the judges and show off their Easter style.

Upcoming Fairs and Festivals

·  The Annual Sustainability Street Fair, hosted by the Clifton Unitarian Universalist Church for the past few years, has merged with The Mighty Kindness Hootenanny on Saturday, April 13th from Noon – 6:00 p.m. at Waterfront Park, Brown-Forman Amphitheater. This event is FREE and open to the public. Click here to register for booth space – there will be a special section of the fair for Sustainability focused booths. Mayor Fischer’s Give a Day Week of Service

The Mayor’s Week of Service is scheduled for April 13-21. Here’s how you can be involved: Plan a volunteer or service project and report the work at www.mygiveaday.com, or go to www.mygiveaday.com and volunteer for a community service project by clicking “to volunteer for an existing project”. Other ideas: donate to Dare to Care, donate new/used shoes to WaterStep, donate blood to American Red Cross, or join the Brightside cleanup. Legal Aid Offers FREE Tax Clinic for Veterans

The Legal Aid Society will offer a free tax clinic for veterans on Thursday, March 28th, at 10:00 AM at the Legal Aid offices, 416 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd., 3rd Floor. Attorneys and trained volunteers will be on hand to help veterans and their families prepare current and past year tax returns. Clients who are determined to owe past year taxes will also have the opportunity to speak to an attorney about resolving their delinquent taxes and may qualify for representation in obtaining a resolution. Prospective clients must meet federal poverty guidelines and be a veteran, the immediate family member of a veteran, or a surviving spouse of a veteran. A reservation for the clinic is required. In addition, the Legal Aid Society announces dates for Ask-A-Lawyer clinics. A Legal Aid advocate will be on hand at each clinic to consult with clients on civil legal problems that include, but are not limited to, divorce, child support, custody, bankruptcy, consumer issues, criminal record expungements, wills, powers of attorney, landlord/tenant issues, probate and guardianship, foreclosure, and small claims. See below for a list of Ask-A-Lawyer clinics. Reservations for Ask-A-Lawyer clinics are not required, although clients must meet federal poverty guidelines to qualify.

Sunday, March 17: Clifton Center will host a screening of the Academy Award Winner from 1956 The Silent World as part of the Wild and Woolly Film Seriesat 7:00pm. The evening will include a special presentation by New Albany resident Bob Braunbeck, Director of Aerial Photography and Cousteau's helicopter pilot from 1975-1990, who will share stories from his forthcoming book, as well as a highlight reel of some of his adventures with Cousteau. The screening will be held in the Clifton Center's Eifler Theatre, 2117 Payne Street, and a cash bar will open at 6:30pm. Admission is free for Friends of the Clifton Center and $5 for the general public.
