Dear President Agrella:
We are pleased to announce that the University of California, Davis, California State University Sacramento and Sonoma State have begun discussions that we anticipate will lead to a new Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) program in educational leadership. The program will be designed to accommodate the schedules of working professionals, and will have two strands; one strand will focus on the leadership needs for K-12, and one for community colleges. In planning the program, we are also committed to designing doctoral education that is responsive tot the real needs faced by today’s school and community colleges.
We are writing to ask you to participate in a half-day planning session with faculty and administrators from our three institutions. We would value your guidance and suggestions about the content and structure of this exciting new program. The date for the planning session has been set for Wednesday, September 4. It will be held at Vizcaya, 2019 21st Street, Sacramento, (916) 455-5243. Beginning at noon we will host a lunch that will include regional leaders from community colleges and K-12. Following lunch, we are asking the leaders from community colleges to work with us from 2pm-4pm.
Enclosed for your information is a planning proposal that outlines some of the proposed program features. We intend to jointly construct a high quality, academically rigorous Ed.D. program built upon a strong scholarly foundation in administrative leadership and characterized by an applied policy focus, appropriate to the program’s location near the state capital. Our goal is to produce increased numbers of leaders with critical skills to take action in advancing educational thinking, policy, and practice in pre-K-12 and community college environments. Because we are hopeful of offering the program as soon as Fall 2003,
formal academic and administrative program planning must begin almost immediately.
