CALL TO ORDER –The agenda having been posted at 11:00 a.m. onJune 3, 2014, the regular meeting of the Anaheim Public Library Board of Trustees was called to orderbyChair Crawford at 6:35 p.m.

  1. INTRODUCTION OF VISITORS AND COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS:
  1. FRIENDS OF THE ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT: John Simon, Part-Time Librarian, attended their Board meeting to present the progress that he has made on the Cal-Humanities Grant he received to help veterans. Monthly revenues are over $1,000. Donations are still needed to stock the shelves. Nancy Carlberg, who has written over six books on genealogy, is willing to present a "seminar or workshop" if there is any interest. The next Board meeting will be at Central Library MPR, Monday, June 23, 1:00 PM.
  1. FRIENDS OF THE CANYON HILLS LIBRARY REPORT: Betsy Kastenshared that the Friends of the Canyon Hills Library are preparing for their Big Bang Book Sale to be held from June 30-July 3, 2014. A plea to the community for donations of children’s book appeared in the Anaheim Hills Bulletin recently. Their new Membership Directory is in process. The election of 2014-15 officers will be held at the July 17thmeeting. FOCAL continues to support Talks & Treats, Children’s Summer Reading Fun, Special Summer Programs, and prizes and refreshments for monthly book talk visits to 3 senior residences. FOCAL membership includes 34 active members, 1 Patron/Business member and 6 Lifetime members.

  1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF THE MAY 12, 2014MEETING: MOTION: That the Library Board approve the minutes of the May 12, 2014meeting as amended. M/S: LM/SO4 Ayes
  1. UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
  1. 2014/15 Library Division Budget:
  • Audrey shared the City’s budget process and the City Council approval dates.
  • An updated budget expenditure report for FY 2013/14 was shared.
  1. ELECTION OF VICE CHAIR: MOTION: That the Library Board nominate and elect Linell Mathisen as Chair and D.R. Heywood as Vice Chair for a term to October 2014. M/S:SO/LC 5 ayes
  1. NEW BUSINESS:
  1. Presentation on LIBRARY IMPACT FEES: Audrey presented information on the three areas, East Hills, Platinum Triangle, and Canyon Specific Plan.
  1. PRESENTATION TO OUTGOING LIBRARY BOARD MEMBERS: Audrey recognized outgoing Library Board Members Carolyn Bryant and Laurie Crawford.
  1. INFORMATION
  1. CITY LIBRARIAN’S REPORT:
  • Josie Martinescu, Anaheim Union High School District Librarian, will be recognized at City Council on June 10, for the Project ACES partnership between the Anaheim Public Library and the Anaheim Union High School District.
  • New Library Board appointments will be made at the June 10, 2014 City Council Meeting.
  • The Orange Crate labels and historic photos featured in the Packing House are from the Anaheim Public Library’s Heritage Services Center’s Collection.
  1. PUBLICITY: Included in packet.
  1. LEGISLATIVE UPDATE: The Budget Conference Committee, on June 4, 2014, approved an increase of $5 million in public library funding, which would restore some of the cuts made to the California Library Services Act and the State Literacy program over the past few years. This is expected to be included in the Budget bill that is being sent to the Governor for his action.
  1. ACTIVITY REPORTS
  1. CENTRAL ADULT & YOUTH SERVICES ACTIVITIES & STATISTICS: Included in packet.
  1. OPERATIONS ACTIVITIES: Included in packet.
  1. BRANCH SERVICES: The dedication of the National Register of Historic Places plaques for the Mother Colony House and Woelke-Stoffel House was held on June 7, 2014.
  1. MONTHLY RECOGNITION OF SUPPORT/CERTIFICATE BY BOARD MEMBERS: The Board recognized f/395 Photography for creating free tintype portraits for the guests at the plaque dedication.
  1. BOARD ITEMS

CAROLYN BRYANT – Enjoyed her time on the Library Board. She raised her children through the Anaheim Library system. It was an unexpected pleasure to be appointed to the Board and she has met some wonderful people over the years.

STAN OFTELIE – Requested to have a draft of the Library Board’s report to City Councilfor fiscal year 2013/14 place on the July agenda.

DAVID ROBERT “D.R.” HEYWOOD – Attended the Packing House Grand Opening, was very impressed and hopes it continues to stay busy.

LINELL MATHISEN, VICE CHAIR – Visited the Packing House on opening day. Linell downloaded a book in conjunction with the Overdrive Challenge that Anaheim Public Library can win prizes for.

LAURIE CRAWFORD, CHAIR – Donated boxes of books and DVDs to the Library. Laurie attended the dedication of the National Register of Historic Places plaques for the Mother Colony House and Woelke-Stoffel House and thought it was very nice. She thanked everyone for allowing her to serve on the Library Board. She enjoyed the Library Division Staff Meetings and found them refreshing and motivating to see employees with so much energy and passion for what they do.
