Career Hotspot…Audiologists

Audiologists test hearing and assess the nature of hearing disorders. They are responsible for the non-medical management and rehabilitation of hearing loss and associated disorders. They also liaise with other health professionals such as speech pathologists, teachers, psychologists and doctors.

Personal Requirements:

  • Good communication skills
  • Able to inspire confidence and co-operation
  • Sympathetic and tactful approach to people

  • Exceptional skills in record keeping
  • Be observent
  • Analytical skills

Education and Training:

You need a pass in the HSC with prerequisite subjects in one or more of English, Advanced English, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and Physics. You then have to complete a Bachelor Degree in linguistics, physics, psychology, special education, speech pathology, science or a related discipline, followed by a master degree in audiology.

Employment Opportunities:

Audiologists are employed by Australian Hearing, major hospitals, community health centres or in academic research or teaching positions. They also work in association with medical practioners who specialise in ear, nose and throat disorders. For any additional information please visit

Did you know that four out of the top six best jobs were maths and stats jobs.

The School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Sydney offers students a great variety of units at all levels, covering the full spectrum from the most abstract to the most applicable aspects of the subject. All Science students are required to study mathematics in their first year. A large number continue to enrol in mathematics and statistics units for the full duration of their degree, and some go on to do an Honours year and postgraduate study.

The University's flexible degree structure allows you to combine mathematics with other areas of interest, right through into your Senior year. Many courses are also offered at an advanced level, so you can choose a program that suits your level of ability and interest.

The School of Mathematics and Statistics of the University of Sydney was founded on 1 January 1991 with the merging of the departments of Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics. It is one of the largest mathematical schools in Australia, and pursues a vigorous program of teaching, scholarship and research.

The teaching activities of the School of Mathematics and Statistics cover all levels from bridging courses to postgraduate degrees.

A degree in Mathematics or Statistics opens up a very wide range of career possibilities. It is a truly general qualification, and an ideal choice for students who want to keep their career options open as long as possible.

By studying mathematics you can develop important skills which are valued by many different types of employers–the ability to solve problems, think logically, construct mathematical and computer models, and research and analyse complex situations.

Even if you do not use many of the specific facts you learn in your mathematics or statistics courses, you will find that these sorts of skills carry over to lots of different careers, and never go out of date. After a first degree there are many opportunities to acquire more specialised expertise, but other chances to improve your mathematical abilities beyond high-school level are hard to find.

This massage therapy qualification course provides excellent hands-on skills for anyone wanting to study to become a massage therapist. Students will adapt their massage therapy training as part of their massage studies on the general public as part of their training.

Meditation

The Professional Certificate of Meditation Facilitation qualification sees students graduate with the skills, techniques and personal practice to confidently teach Meditation groups and sessions.

This Nutritionist qualification is geared towards those wishing to practice as a Nutritionist with a holistic approach, and is different from dietetics.
