Business Development Manager - Life Sciences

Based at Invent DCU the Business Development Manager - Life Sciences is a new shared post between Dublin City University and The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland funded by Enterprise Ireland under the Technology Transfer Strengthening Initiative Programme 2012.

The role will also involve the provision of commercialisation assessment and related IP services to Dundalk Institute of Technology. The work will involve the active commercialization of life science market opportunities with external customers, the assessment of intellectual property and discoveries in life science research programmes in biotechnology and medical science and the development of a close interaction with DCU’s and RCSI’s SFI funded professors and their clinical collaborators. Working closely with the 3U Partnership (www.3upartnership.ie) a key objective will be to assess and develop exploitation strategies through industry collaborations for research funded by the three institutions through the Translational Research Hub which is a DCU/RCSI/NUIM initiative in translational medical science. The person appointed will be an Invent DCU Ltd employee and will report to the CEO of Invent and to the Director of Technology Transfer & Commercialisation at RCSI and will operate between both campuses.

Duties

·  Develop and implement exploitation strategies through licensing and spin-outs;

·  Actively map in-house opportunities to market needs and develop strong commercial leads;

·  Participate in negotiations with spin-out company promoters and investors and close licensing and spin-out deals;

·  Business development of a pipeline of licensing opportunities through Innovation Partnerships and other collaborative research programmes such as IRCSET schemes

·  Assessment of innovations and licensing opportunities at RCSI, DKIT as agreed from time to time

·  Developing relationships with external entrepreneurs to support DCU objectives for spin-out companies

·  Identification of innovations or expertise with industrial or commercial potential

·  Assessment of patentability of invention disclosures

·  Assessment of laboratory notebooks and IP procedures

·  Liaison with patent agents in the preparation and filing of patent applications

·  Assessment of commercialisation aspects of research proposals to Enterprise Ireland and Science Foundation Ireland and providing assistance and support to researchers in preparing applications.

·  Review of publications for potential disclosure of commercially sensitive information

·  Promotion of DCU and DCU research and innovation programmes at national events organised by Invent, Enterprise Ireland and Science Foundation Ireland

·  Coordinate commercialisation initiatives with Intellectual Property Managers and with Commercial Development Managers in CSETs and other SFI funded centres

The person appointed will ideally have:

·  A post-graduate qualification in a life sciences discipline or business to MSc level or equivalent professional experience with a master’s degree in a relevant field;

·  Relevant business experience in commercialising new technology in a commercial environment;

·  Proven experience of having led licensing negotiations either in a university or in industry, preferably backed up with a summary of deals completed;

·  Experience of the IP issues arising in the context of academic research and in particular from academic/industry collaboration.

·  An ability to win the confidence of researchers and company representatives and experience of working at the public sector/industrial sector interface

·  A minimum of five years experience in business development, product management or consultancy.

·  The personal capability to develop relationships at different levels within the University, and its partners RCSI, NUIM and DKIT and across a wide range of external organisations
