Scholarship Guidelines and Application

for Academic Year

2017 – 2018

The Scots’ Charitable Society(SCS) & Woman’s Auxiliary (WA) Scholarships may be awarded to persons of Scottish extraction for Undergraduate studies or for studies at an approved Trade School. The Applicant must be sponsored by a member who is currently active in either Society.

The completed application and following required documents must be mailed with a legible postmark dated no later than Saturday, April 1, 2017 – no exceptions.

Please Note:do not staple pages together or make doubled sided copies and do not send it certified mail.

Your application must include the following:

#1 – All applicants – Provide your latest official transcripts.

#1A- University freshman must provide BOTH their first semester university transcripts AND their high school transcripts.

#1B – All applicants must be full-time students. A full-time student is one who is taking at least 12 credit hours per semester, quarter or trimester.

#2 – All applicants – A letter from the applicant’s SCS or WAsponsor in support of the applicant.

#3 – High School or Trade School applicant – obtain a Letter of Recommendation from your Guidance Counselor or a Teacher on official school letterhead. An applicant already in college or an approved school – obtain a Letter of Recommendation from a Professor or Instructor on official school letterhead. SCS Chairman’s suggestion – Request Letters of Recommendation early!

#4 – Applicant’s currentresume

#5- A signed copy of the Scholarship Acknowledgement form

Applicants entering their freshman, sophomore, or junior year in college are required to participate in a short interview with Scholarship Committee teams. The committee teams will assess your academic achievement, your community service/activities, and your Scottish-related experiences and efforts. Qualified applicants will be invited by mail to interview on Sunday, May 25, 2017 at 16 Imperial Court, Westborough, MA, and theinterview time will be indicated in the invitation.

The interview is a component of the overall application. The application will be considered incomplete without the interview. Under extraordinary circumstances, a phone interview can be arranged, but MUST be completed prior to the in-person interview date.

Recipients of scholarships (or stand-in and/or family) are requested to attend the Award Ceremony held at a location and Sunday, June 25 2017 at 1:00 pm. An Application must be submitted for each eligible academic year.

If awarded a scholarship, I will, to the best of my ability, complete my program of study. I realize this scholarship is to be used for educational purposes only. If unable to use the scholarship monies toward undergraduate studies, the monies will be returned to the SCS or WA.

Special Awards

Applicants are eligible for consideration for additional awards. They are as follows:

The Elisabeth Thomson Award($500)

This special award was established in 1990 to honor Elisabeth Thomson, a long-time member of the Scots' Charitable Society Woman's Auxiliary. Given annually by the Auxiliary in memory of Elisabeth, the award is presented to a first-time deserving young woman with a goal of a college degree despite financial obstacles. If you believe you may be eligible for The Thomson Award, please provide a separateoriginalshort essay with your application outlining your qualifications.

The Eugene M. Lockhart Award ($500)

The Eugene M. Lockhart scholarship is to be awarded to a student athletewho has demonstrated academic excellence while at the same time providingleadership and inspiration in the sport of their choice. In addition, demonstrationof their commitment to the community they live in is a plus. Criteria for the award:

  • Achieve consistent, above average grades academically.
  • Positively impact the success of a sporting team of their choice. This can take the form of statistics reflecting their performance, a written endorsement from a coach or other means of the applicant’s choice.
  • Demonstrate a concern for the community they live in through volunteerism at their school or within their community.

The Roberts Award ($300)

This award in the amount of $300 is for the best essay written about your Scottish heritage and funded by the Roberts family (separate original essay required).

The David G. McPherson Award ($2,500)

This scholarship is awarded to a student studyingan engineering discipline. The award is funded by brothers Gregg, David, and Michael in memory of their father, David McPherson.Separate originalessay required.
