Priority Ranking - Detailed

LOCATION / ISSUE / STUDY RECOMMENDATION / Priority
Grange Road / Low hanging powerlines across the carriageway may cause vertical clearance issues for large vehicles. / Develop a corridor management plan to improve traffic safety and movement for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists for Grange Road, including rationalisation of right turn movements or creation of right turn pockets where possible to improve movement and safety. Consider implementation of other Road Safety Audit recommendations. / Immediate
Vegetation overhanging the carriageway.vehicles.
No bus zone signs or pavement markings at bus stops.
All threshold treatment pavement markings on the eastern legs of Grange Road intersections are faded.
Street lights are located only within the eastern verge of Grange Road and results in 'patches' of light on the corridor at night.
The free flow speed of traffic was perceived to be higher than appropriate for the road environment, geometry and lane widths.
No standing signage is present.
A large number of powerpoles are located within the clear zone, mostly within the western verge.
The pavement on the road is wearing and in an average condition.
There is a need for additional RRPMS to assist with alignment recognition at night.off alignment.
Kedron Brook bridge has no end treatment protection on the bridge wall (northbound direction).
Footpaths on both sides of road are narrow (approximately 0.8m width).
Signage to enforce left turn only movements at Blandford Street is minimal.
The no right turn sign opposite Blandford Street is hard to see.
Grange Road/Dennis Street / Sight distance out of Dennis Street is limited. / Immediate
Grange Road/Howard Street / Sight distance out of Howard Street is limited. / Immediate
The stop sign at the Howard Street intersection is obscured by a tree.
Grange Road/Myrtle Street / Sight distance out of Myrtle Street is limited. / Immediate
Right turns into Bega and Myrtle Streets (heading northbound) are a risk due to limited sight distances from vertical curvature..
Wilston Rd / Newmarket Rd / Free left turn encourages high speed & Wilston Rd to potentially be used by trucks. / Consider amendments to signal phasing to achieve a protected right turn, or upgrade to achieve a protected right turn pocket on the eastern leg. Consider implementing Road Safety Audit recommendations / Immediate
No give way sign at left turn into Wilston Road from Newmarket Road. The geometry of the turn may be confused as a priority lane.
“Unsuitable for large vehicles” sign at left turn into Wilston Road is not visible from Newmarket Road and is very small. There is also no signage on westbound approach.
The right turn from Newmarket Road into Wilston Road is a filtered right turn through tight geometry. Road.
Linemarking at intersection is faded.
There is no advanced warning for signals travelling west due to the crest and horizontal curve before intersection.
Median island is thin and not visible to eastbound traffic.
On-street parking is permitted between Newmarket Road and Clowes Lane.
Silvester St / Noble St/ Newmarket Rd / No left turn ban from Kedron Brook Rd into Newmarket Rd in AM peak. / Develop a revised intersection layout to improve operation and safety for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.
Develop a corridor management plan to improve traffic safety and movement for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists for Newmarket Road, including rationalisation of right turn movements or creation of right turn pockets where possible to improve movement and safety. Also Consider implementation of the Road Safety Audit recommendations. / Immediate
Signal phasing for right turn from Noble St into Newmarket Road needs to be reviewed.
Minimal dedicated right-turn signals may explain for collisions at intersection, such as through/right-turn collisions.
Potential distraction to drivers with video LED variable message signs adjacent to intersection at adjacent car dealership.
Power poles close to kerb.
Shallow slip lane entry into Noble St allows for turns at speed. Noble St is sign posted at 40kph.
Pavement markings faded. Nearby bus stop on Kedron Brook Rd line markings not visible. bus stop.

Also Consider implementation of the Road Safety Audit recommendations. / Immediate
On Green Tce approach, parked vehicles are found on left-turn lane.
Right-turn from Newmarket Road to Cox Road managed by turn ban from 4pm-7pm. Observed instances of non-compliance.
Strong right-turn demand from Newmarket Rd to Green Tce has the potential (and have realised through crash records) for rear-end accidents as there are no dedicated right turn bays and current signal setup shows right-turn red arrow on through green.
Lamont Rd / Newmarket Rd / Need to improve safety for crossing pedestrians/cyclists at Newmarket Rd/Lamont Rd / Consider installation of traffic signals with a right turn pocket with protected right turns, and consider Road Safety Audit recommendations. / Immediate
Vehicles turning right into Lamont Rd from Newmarket Rd must stop in the right hand lane. Drivers travelling on Newmarket Rd are trained to stick to the right hand lane due to parked vehicles on the kerbside lane. This has the potential for rear-end crashes, as indicated in crash records
Sightline from Lamont Rd into Newmarket Rd disrupted by railway overpass non-transparent anti-throw barrier for approaching vehicles. At stop bar, visibility is favoured by Lamont Rd's location on top of crest on Newmarket Rd.
Power poles close to kerb creating visibility and potential serious crash issues.
Lutwyche Rd / Maygar St / Signage on Gympie Rd into Maygar St to specify "Left Lane Only Turns Left" / Consider installation of advanced signage on Lutwyche Road, southern approach, indicating"Left Lane Only Turns Left". / Immediate
Lutwyche Road/ Fuller Street / There is no signage in the centre median at the intersection of Fuller Street and Lutwyche Road to advise drives of left turn only onto Lutwyche Road. / Consider implementation of Road Safety Audit recommendations / Immediate
Vehicles are allowed to park near the intersection of Fuller Street and Lutwyche Road. This restricts the sight distance available to drivers pulling out of the driveway and having to cross over to the opposing lane to pass. There is a
Maygar Street/ Flower Road / No stop treatment at intersection of Flower Rd and Maygar Street. There is a risk vehicles will fail to stop and give right of way resulting in a vehicle collision.
Also due to the steep gradient along Flower Road on the approach to the intersection, there is a risk drivers will misinterpret the intersection location and having to apply brakes heavily to stop in time. Failing to stop in time can result in the vehicle travelling onto Maygar Street and colliding with other vehicles. / Consider implementation of Road Safety Audit recommendations / Immediate
Maygar Street/Brook Street / Although left turn only sign provided at Brook Street intersecting with Maygar Street, the island arrangement allows sufficient space for vehicles to travel straight. / Consider signalisation and removal of turning restrictions to improve accessibility and safety for vehicles and pedestrians, or alternatively enhance existing geometry to prevent banned turning movements. / Immediate
Need to improve safety for pedestrians crossing Maygar Street near Brook Street.
Very difficult to see oncoming vehicles for pedestrians trying to cross the road to access the bus stop on the other side at Maygar Street and Brook Street intersection. vehicle.
Due to the crest prior to Brook Street along Maygar Street, there is a risk drivers will not be able to sight a stopped vehicle wanting to turn right into Brook Street.
Currently parking is not restricted in the marked shoulder next to the embankment along Maygar Street near Brook Street.
There is limited sight distance for vehicles turning left onto Maygar Street from Brook Street to see oncoming vehicles.
Stafford Road/ Richmond Street / The pedestrian green walk indicator is not functioning on the south-west corner of the Stafford Road/ Richmond Street intersection. / Consider implementation of Road Safety Audit recommendations / Immediate
At the Stafford Road/ Richmond Street intersection a driveway is located on the north side of the intersection. Traffic leaving this driveway is not able to observe traffic phases for movements along Stafford.
Wilston Road/Days Road / Sight distance at Days Road (travelling southbound) is limited and presents an uncomfortable situation for the driver. Drivers are unable to identify oncoming traffic until after entering the carriageway.
Visibility is restricted in both directions by adjacent properties and on-street parking.
Risk of conflicts between turning and through traffic at the intersection. / Develop a scheme to improve traffic safety and movement for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists for Days Road and consider implementation of Road Safety Audit Recommendations / Immediate
Improve intersection. Extend median to prevent N/B traffic to continue up Wilston Rd
The need for “No Through Road” provision at Wilston/Days intersection needs to be reviewed..
Wilston Road/Murrell Street & Wilston Road/Mina Parade / Sight distance to the north from Murrell Street is limited due to the level crossing infrastructure.
Risk of conflict between turning and through traffic at the intersection. / Consider signalisation of the two intersections either side of the railway level crossing so that they are integrated with boomgate closures. / Immediate
Newmarket Road / All kerb ramps on Newmarket Road are lacking TGSIs.
Although the absence of TGSIs does not immediately introduce a road safety hazard, the provision of TGSIs in high volume traffic and pedestrian environments reduces the risk of pedestrians standing too close to the travelled path of vehicles and reduces the risk of pedestrian conflicts. / Develop a corridor management plan to improve traffic safety and movement for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists for Newmarket Road, including rationalisation of right turn movements or creation of right turn pockets where possible to improve movement and safety. Also consider implementation of the Road Safety Audit recommendations. / High
No low clearance advanced warning sign present for turning vehicles into Coles Newmarket car park..
The eastbound section of Newmarket Road is designated as a no standing zone in peak periods between Lanham Crescent and Baradine Street.a vertical crest.
Linemarking is worn at the Coles Newmarket intersection.control.
RRPMs are missing from Wilston Road to Enogerra Road.
The bicycle route on Lind Street leads into a narrow pedestrian footpath on Newmarket Road.
The advertisement that is immediately visible upon turning right from Enogerra Road into Newmarket Road appears to be over sized and too bright for its location.
The current median island at the western end of Newmarket Road does not prevent vehicles from undertaking a u-turn after leaving the Coles car park.
Street lighting between Lanham Crescent and Wilston Road was observed as significantly darker than other sections of Newmarket Road.
Finsbury / Newmarket / Right-turn from Newmarket Rd to Finsbury St have recorded crashes, such as rear ends, potentially from lack of safe right turn provisions and from traffic on Newmarket Rd sticking to right hand lane. / Consider creating a protected right turn pocket to improve safety and accessibility as part of a Newmarket Road corridor management scheme. Consider Road Safety Audit recommendations / High
No pedestrian path on northbound approach of Finsbury St. Evidence of foot traffic observed through exposed ground.
Crash records indicate collision with parked car to the west of the intersection with Finsbury St. cars.
Victoria / Rosemount / Newmarket / Parked cars on kerbside lane of Newmarket Rd limits sightlines and visibility for vehicles turning into Newmarket Rd. / Consider left in/left out arrangement or right turn pockets on Newmarket Rd as part of any future upgrade works and parking evaluation.
Consider implementation of Road Safety Audit recommendations / High
Potential rear-end collisions from no protected turn bays on Newmarket Rd to turn into Victoria / Rosemount.
Sightlines from Rosemount Tce to Newmarket Rd (looking west) is undesirable due to cliff terrain.
Local business access loading zone driveway (exit only) into Newmarket Rd is marked for both left turn and right turn. Observed vehicle making difficult move to find gaps across three lanes of traffic to make right turn.
Street trees have the potential to disrupt sightlines from Victoria Street to Newmarket Road (looking east).
Road sign at intersection towards Lutwyche Rd appears to be clipped by a heavy vehicle.
Road markings such as the 'Keep Clear' stop bars have faded.
Kerbside lanes frequently used for parking. Markings do not indicate a lane drop and do not clearly divert traffic. Risk of car crash into parked cars realised along Newmarket Road.
Power poles close to kerb creating visibility issues.
Days Rd / Grange Rd / Ramp not aligned with crossing at intersection / Consider intersection enhancements to improve efficiency of operation and safety. Implement Road Safety Audit Recommendations. / High
Signal timing encourages non-local traffic
Pavement arrows on the eastern leg of the Days Road intersection are worn and may cause confusion about turning designations at the intersection.
All linemarking at the intersection is starting to wear and fade.
Geometry for dual right turns northbound is tight for two vehicles simultaneously turning, particularly large vehicles (there is a bus route that uses this movement).
Vehicles in the outside lane were observed crossing guide lines and into adjacent lane.
There is a risk of side swipe collisions for northbound vehicles turning right from Days Road.
During peak periods, congestion of the northbound left turn from Days Road into Grange Road may result in through movements on Days Road (eastbound) travelling in the westbound lane opposing traffic (due to driver impatience)
A large amount of roadside furniture is located within the clear zone at the intersection.
The bus route that travels through the Days Road intersection and onto Thomas Street was observed to cause issues during peak hour traffic due to a combination of narrow geometry and proximity of Thomas Street to the intersection.
Risk of buses clipping vehicles in keep clear zone
The heavy vehicle route sign located at the Grange Road intersection, travelling westbound, is not in an obvious location (located on signal mast arm).
Potential for heavy vehicles to travel through to Colston Road.
Days Road/ Kedron Brook Road / There is limited sight distance available from the pedestrian crossing at the Days Road / Kedron Brook Road intersection due to the crossing location relative to the shop front.. / Remove roundabout and install traffic signals to achieve more efficient operation, and improve movement and crossing safety for pedestrians and cyclists. / High
The Days Road / Kedron Brook Road intersection caters for a high number of on road cyclists. The westbound intersection approach has on road parking very close to the roundabout.
The Days Road / Kedron Brook Road intersection caters for a high number of on road cyclists. The intersection approaches have narrow lanes widths and no shoulder.
On the Days Road eastbound approach to Kedron Brook Road intersection, the pedestrian crossing ramp is combined with private driveway access.
Grange Road/Raymont Road / 60km/h speed limit sign obscured by vegetation at Raymont Rd intersection (western verge).. / Consider intersection enhancements to improve efficiency of operation and safety - particularly a right turn pocket on Grange Road with protected right turn. Implement Road Safety Audit recommendations. / High
The filtered right turn arrangement causes cars to prop at a high volume intersection.
Vertical crest south of signals limits sight distance to the south which will increase the average time required to identify a safe gap in traffic to turn right.
The vertical crest prior to signals limits sight distance to the back of queues northbound.
Linemarking at the intersection is showing signs of wearing/fading.
The signal lanterns at the Raymont Road intersection do not have LED bulbs installed.
Older lanterns have reduced visibility and are more likely to fail.
Kedron Brook Rd / Downgrade road to cater for local traffic only / Develop a scheme to further improve corridor movement and safety for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. Consider creation of right turn pockets at District and Neighbourhood level connections and banning right turns at other minor intermediate connections where sight distance or other factors such as on street parking affect safety. Consider implementation of other Road Safety Audit recommendations. / High
