MRS. BROWN’S SHOP
STUDENT INFORMATION PACKET (2010 – 2011):
EXPECTATIONS:
In SHOP I, which is a semester class, we will be studying various units, including basic tool safety and information, and completing various woodworking projects. This is an elective class, but please be prepared to work hard! It is a requirement to bring a good attitude to class EVERY DAY. J
TOOL SAFETY: It is the law that you must be taught tool and basic shop safety every year. You must pass written and practical (“hands-on”) tests for each tool in the Shop. Please be prepared to do this the first few weeks of each semester you take this class!!
GRADING:
Please note that you earn the grades that you receive, and you will get as much out of this class as what you put INTO it. Please remember to ask your fellow classmates or partner for help first, as I believe in promoting teamwork and support for one another. However, I am here to help as well. As follows is a list of the percentages and their corresponding letter grades:
A = 90 – 100% B = 80 – 89% C = 70 – 79% D = 60 – 69%
F = 59% and below
Grades are based on points earned out of possible points for each assignment…tests and large projects will be weighted more, thus, they will be worth more points. Organization is key in this class, so knowing what you need to accomplish each day is important. Please check whiteboard on a daily basis. Grades will be earned by both EFFORT and FINISHED products.
HOMEWORK:
The majority of assignments for this class will be completed in class, but there are always exceptions to this, as there may be some projects you may have to work on or finish at home.
LATE WORK POLICY:
If work or a project is completed late (even the next day), you will receive no more than 60% of the total points. That said; if you are absent, you have ONE WEEK to complete the assignments or tasks that you have missed. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to find out from classmates what you have missed. If you have further questions, then you may ask me. Please indicate whether it is “LATE” or “ABSENT” on the assignment.
EXTRA CREDIT:
NO EXTRA CREDIT WILL BE AVAILABLE IN THIS CLASS. PLEASE COMPLETE YOUR PROJECTS ON TIME.
PROGRESS IN CLASS: FAMILY ACCESS will be updated once per week. “Hard copy” progress reports will be given at mid-term, and if requested by a parent.
SUPPLIES REQUIRED:
You need to have the following supplies with you in class each day – no later than FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 10th. You will need to bring these with you to class every day. Do NOT rely on borrowing things from me or from friends. However, if obtaining any of these supplies may be a problem for you, please let me know and we can work something out.
** At least TWO (2) SHARPENED PENCILS – no mechanical pencils, please
** 1 folder (with three-hole paper holders) that you can keep papers in
** 1 GRID (GRAPH) PAPER Composition Book (the paper is graph paper)
ASSIGNMENTS:
Please use a proper heading on all written assignments – use the right side of the paper, beginning on the FIRST line of the paper. Include your first and last name, the class period, the date, and write the ASSIGNMENT on the LEFT side, beginning on the FIRST line of the paper. Thank you!
**Please turn in all of your assignments to your class period’s proper basket and please do NOT put any written work, etc. on my desks or workspaces.
OBTAINING AND ASKING FOR HELP:
First, attempt to complete the assignment on your own. If partner or group work is allowed, check with your partner or group FIRST. Be resourceful. You will occasionally be given assignments that we have not discussed thoroughly in class, and you may also assessed on information for which I’d like to see what you know first. Keep this in mind. If you are still having difficulty, raise your hand or come get my attention. If I am helping another student, please be polite and wait. Be patient and go on to another task/assignment while you are waiting. If there is ANY question about what you are doing that may harm the computer/tools, DO NOT move ahead – please ask first! J
TEACHER EXPECTATIONS/CLASS POLICIES:
ALL students have the right to learn. No student has the right to prevent others from learning. Please greet each other and teacher daily. Classroom expectations are:
· AVOID DISRUPTION WHILE OTHERS ARE TALKING – KNOW THE “SOUND LEVELS”
· BE RESPECTFUL OF OTHERS AND THEIR PROPERTY (INCLUDES SCHOOL PROPERTY)
· KNOW BOUNDARIES, BOTH PERSONAL AND PHYSICAL
· LEAVE NEGATIVITY AND DISHONESTY AT THE DOOR
· SAFETY FIRST – USE CAUTION AROUND MACHINERY AND IN SHOP – SAFETY IS MANDATORY IN THIS CLASS!! UNSAFE BEHAVIOR WILL NOT BE TOLERATED!!!
CONSEQUENCES:
**1st Offense: verbal warning (can come in several forms)
**2nd Offense: parent phone call or e-mail/DETENTION
**3rd Offense: removal from room
**4th Offense: office referral – removal from room and sent to office
Please keep in mind; I reserve the right to skip any of the above steps, depending on the severity of the offense. If you choose not to change your behavior, the Discipline Frameworks will be followed. These Discipline Frameworks will be followed by our school and reviewed by all students on the first few days of school in Block and English classes.
Keep in mind that you are responsible for your own actions. It is important for you to conduct yourself in a responsible manner. If poor behavior choices continue, you may be put on a Behavior Contract before returning to the classroom. Remember, electives are a privilege and behavior must reflect your understanding of this fact.
