Mr. Kroll’s MLA Checklist

for Microsoft Word 97-2003

Before typing your essay…

·  Type your first and last name

·  Hit enter once

·  Type “Mr. Kroll”

·  Hit enter once

·  Type “English 10”

·  Hit enter once

·  Type “22 November 2013”

·  Hit enter once

·  Click “Center” on the alignment toolbar

·  Type your title (Make sure it’s not the name of the story or assignment…be creative!)

·  Hit enter once

·  Click “Align Left” on the alignment toolbar

·  Begin typing your essay

While typing your essay…

·  Make sure you hit tab only once to indent new paragraphs

·  Make sure you hit enter only once to start new paragraphs

After typing your essay...

·  Highlight all text and select “Times New Roman or Arial” font

·  While text is still highlighted, select size 12 font

·  While text is still highlighted, right click on text, and click “Paragraph”

o  Under the “Indents and Spacing” tab, find the “Line spacing” section and select “Double”

o  Under the “Line and Page Breaks” tab, make sure that the “Widow/Orphan control” box is checked (turned on)

o  Click “OK”

·  Go to “File”, select “Page setup”, and make sure all margins are set to 1” (the default on most computers is 1.25”)

·  Go to “View” and select “Header and Footer”

·  On the alignment toolbar, click “Align Right” and type in your last name, hit the space bar only once, and then on the “Header and Footer” toolbar that pops up, select the button with the “#” sign that says “Insert Page Number”

·  Save and print J
