2. JOB TITLE: YMCA YOUTH ACTION PROJECT WORKER

3. RESPONSIBLE TO: YMCA’s Chatterbox Lead

4. JOB PURPOSE: To assist with the direct delivery of a 12 week youth action project. To engage and support young people aged 13-19 in voluntary activities, working in partnership with the statutory, private and voluntary sector to ensure inclusion for all young people, specifically those with disabilities.

5. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

a)  To help recruit, support and develop a youth action project, to share resources and good practice and to promote and work within a youth-action/youth-led framework.

b)  To recruit, track and monitor young people aged 13-19 for the Bournemouth YMCA’s Chatterbox Project in a direct delivery project. In particular, to prioritise young people who have disabilities.

c)  To support volunteers and their families throughout their volunteering experience.

d)  To offer a project which is creative, innovative and reflect young people’s passion’s and interests.

e)  To work with other YMCA staff, staff from Bournemouth Youth Service and outside agencies to organise and run weekly sessions.

f)  To promote and implement local awards to young volunteers to enable them to record their volunteering experiences.

g)  To work with the YMCA’s Chatterbox Project to ensure that all work undertaken is committed to Bournemouth YMCA’s principles.

h)  To be conscious of working as part of a broad YMCA team serving young people throughout Bournemouth and to contribute to joined up approaches.

i)  To enable young peoples’ voices to be heard with the integrated youth support framework and wider forums.

j)  To follow YMCA policies and procedures and to ensure all work complies with Health and Safety, Safeguarding Children and Equal Opportunities legislation.

k)  To attend supervision meetings and contribute to internal review meetings with partner organisations as required.

l)  To work within the specified YMCA Youth Action Project budget.

m)  To produce written and verbal reports as required.

In addition to the job set out in this job description the worker may, from time to time, be required to undertake additional or other duties as necessary within his or her capabilities and status to meet the needs of Bournemouth YMCA.

6. SCALE AND IMPACT

The worker will work within the YMCA’s Chatterbox Project as part of the YMCA Programmes team. He/she will work within the set budgets controlled by the YMCA.

7. DISCRETION TO ACT

The person appointed will have discretion to act on a day-to-day basis to ensure that the work is satisfactorily delivered within the YMCA Bournemouth’s principles. He/she will be directly responsible to the YMCA’s Chatterbox lead in the team.

8. ENVIRONMENT

The post will require the worker to work on a Wednesday from 4.30-6.30pm with young people and flexible hours for administration. The YMCA team will operate as an integral part of the YMCA Bournemouth’s Programmes Department and will be based at Fusion Youth Centre with direct delivery of the project being held at Sussed Youth Advice Centre in Kinson.

9. RELATIONSHIPS

Internal – The worker will relate to other YMCA Bournemouth’s funded staff members through regular project review meetings and report directly to the YMCA’s Chatterbox team on a regular basis. In addition he/she will work in synergy with the broader YMCA staff team serving young people across Bournemouth.

External – The worker will develop and maintain effective communication and working relationships with youth workers in the statutory, private and voluntary sector partner organisations within Bournemouth

SECTION B: PERSON SPECIFICATION

1. QUALIFICATIONS

No formal qualifications are required.

2. EXPERIENCE

The person appointed should have experience of a youth/community context. Although not essential, experience within the disability field would be advantageous.

3. ABILITIES AND SKILLS

·  Awareness of the issues for young people living in Bournemouth

·  Excellent communication skills; especially with young people is essential.

·  Understanding of youth-led, youth-action and peer support models

·  Knowledge of diversity and equality and commitment to engage young people who are under-represented in society.

·  Self starter with ability to drive forward an agenda independently

·  Ability to work as part of a team

·  Good time management and organisational skills

·  Ability to inspire and motivate young people.

4. PERSONAL

The YMCA is a Christian organisation and the worker must be fully supportive of the Association’s Aims and Purposes.

SECTION C: TERMS AND CONDITIONS

1. SALARY

YMCA Bournemouth Special Grade - £15,558.48 per annum pro rata.

2. HOURS OF WORK

The normal working week will be 4 hours. Direct Delivery of the project with young people will take place on a Wednesday from 4.30-6.30pm but 2 hours administration can flexible. Overtime is not paid but time off in lieu may be given as agreed with the YMCA’s Chatterbox Lead.

3. TERM OF CONTRACT

Fixed term contract.

4. PAID LEAVE ENTITLEMENT

Four weeks per annum pro rata plus statutory holidays

5. SICK PAY PROVISION

Two weeks per annum, pro rata

6. PENSION ENTITLEMENT

After three months’ employment the worker will be eligible to join YMCA Bournemouth’s contributory stakeholder pension scheme. The Finance Manager should be asked to provide details.

7. PERIOD OF NOTICE OFFERED AND REQUIRED

One month’s notice is required from the worker and one month’s notice will be given by the YMCA or the statutory minimum if greater.

8. CONDITIONS OF APPOINTMENT

The employment will be subject to satisfactory references and a Criminal Records Bureau Enhanced Disclosure. This post is subject to the rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) order 1975 and (Exceptions) (Amendment) order 1986.

9. IN-SERVICE TRAINING

The person appointed will be expected to participate in In-service Training Modules as deemed appropriate by the YMCA’s Chatterbox Lead for which budgetary provision will be made.

10. MISCELLANEOUS

The YMCA’s Chatterbox Team will be responsible for carrying out regular work reviews with the postholder.
