2013-2014 Pakistani/US Connection


Collaborative Plans

·  Jesse Stollings Jr., Social Studies teacher at Watauga High School, is collaborating with the Boys Junior School in Pakistan. Together they are working on a project entitled, “Influence of Greek Civilization on International Communities”. During this project, students will learn about Greek influence on their own country, as well as analyze each other’s culture for similarities and differences. Additionally, students will evaluate changes in the influences over time.

·  Hardin Park Elementary teachers, Emily Rothrock, Russell Hiatt, Tammi Harvey, and Joni Horine, are working with Cambridge School Pakistani teachers, Mr. Rao, Mr. Qazi Anuar, and Mrs. Shaheena, on a project entitled “Connections”. The goal of this project is to understand the influences of civilizations on modern society. During this project, both American and Pakistani students will learn about the civilizations and influences of their country and prepare presentations which will be shared with each other. After presentations are shared, students will be assigned a problem based learning activity, which will require students to use information from both sets of presentations in order to solve a problem.

·  Civics and Economics teacher, from Watauga High School, Susan Lawrence, is working with Mr. Yousaf Jan Babar’s classroom in Pakistan, at the School and College for Men (ages 9-12). Their project is entitled, “International Value Systems”, during which students will create an international value system that will include considerations of human rights, climate and environmental issues, values and behavior, media, gender issues, opportunity and inclusion. Students will explore the rights and responsibilities of citizens of the international community. Additionally, students will examine the role of education in fostering the new value system by exploring and identifying shared practices.

·  Green Valley Elementary teachers, Lauren Salisbury, Maria Jamell, and Erin Drew, are collaborating with Mrs. Samana Mubashir and Mrs. Gulafshan Hashmi, from the School and College for Women in Pakistan. Their project is entitled, “A Country I Would Like to Visit”, which uses creative writing to demonstrate understanding and using vocabulary to increase exposure to language and culture.

·  Dr. Linda McCalister and Dr. Elaine O’Quinn, of Appalachian State University, are also collaborating with the School and College for Women in Pakistan. The goal of this project is to identify and connect girls from the tribal regions to girls in the United States and is entitled, “Girls Stories”.
