JMU Vocal Arts Camp (Senior)
July 24 – 28, 2018
Under the direction of the Choral Area at James Madison University, talented elementary, middle and high school singers will have the opportunity to share in a summer experience of choral singing! In addition to daily rehearsals, movement classes and group social activities, campers receive daily Kodály-based choral instruction. OurVocal Arts Music Ensembles include:
- VAC Men’s Chorus(all male singers)
- VAC Women’s Chorus (all female singers)
- VAC Treble Choirall (singers in grades 3-8 with unchanged voices)
- VAC Concert Choir(all singers grades8-12)
- VAC Music Theatre Ensembls(all singers grades 8-12)
- VAC A Cappella Ensembles
- VAC Rock Ensemble
Students are assigned according to voice type and age to multiple ensembles for the week and will prepare and present from 4-9 pieces of music in Festival Concert.
The choirs are directed by Jo-Anne van der Vat-Chromy and Jacqui Knappenberger nationally recognized leaders in choral music education. Both faculty and students from the Choral Music Education Area at JMU support and teach in this program. James Madison University is located in the beautiful ShenandoahValley in the center of Harrisonburg, VA and is conveniently located just off Interstate 81. Camp activities will make use of several JMU facilities, Wampler Hall dormitory, and the Forbes Center for the Performing Arts Concert Hall; the setting for our Vocal Arts Camp Festival Concert on Saturday, July 29, at 2:00 am.
About Our Conductors:
JMU 2016Woman of Distinction Award Winner and Director of Choral Activities Dr. Jo-Anne van der Vat-Chromy is a Maryland native who hails most recently from Tallahassee, Florida. A proud Seminole, she completed her doctoral studies in choral music education/choral conducting at The Florida State University, with Drs. André Thomas, Kevin Fenton, Judy Bowers and Clifford K. Madsen. Dr. van der Vat-Chromy also served as vocal music director at Tallahassee Community College, conducting the seventy-voice Tallahassee Civic Chorale and the TCC Select Ensemble Illuminare. Formerly on the music staff of The International School of Brussels, Belgium, Jo-Anne most recently served as the Vocal Music Director at the American School of The Hague, in The Netherlands Jo-Anne was also the founder/music director of Het Davidkoor, a subsidized thirty voice Dutch women’s choir who, for over eighteen years, has focused on the integration of choral music and holistic music making. In addition to her doctoral degree in Music Education/Choral Conducting from Florida State, Dr. van der Vat-Chromy holds Teacher Certification from the University of Michigan, a MM in Horn Performance from Bowling Green State University, and BA in Music from St. Mary’s College of Maryland. Her research interests include the kinesthetic connections in conducting pedagogy, choral acoustic music measurement, curriculum/assessment strategies for middle and high school choirs, and the sociological impact of choral cultures on student learning. As Director of Choral Activities at James Madison University, Dr. van der Vat-Chromy directs The Madison Singers, the JMU Chorale and the University Women’s Chorus. Her academic responsibilities include graduate thesis supervision, undergraduate and graduate choral conducting, high school choral methods, graduate choral literature and student teacher supervision. “Dr. V.” is a delighted member of the JMU Mahatma Gandhi Center for Global Nonviolence, where her work is coordinating musical activities and embedded choral teaching opportunities into the Gandhi Center summer programs for global non-violence, peace and consciousness. Dr. V served from 2012-2014 as Interim Music Director for the Shenandoah Valley Children's Choir and is currently director of the JMU Vocal Arts Summer Camp.
Mrs. Jacqueline Knappenberger is thrilled to be a part of Vocal Arts Camp at JMU this summer! She teaches choir, piano, and AP music theory at Stuarts Draft High School. She is the former Director of Choral Activities at Herbert C. Hoover Middle School in Indialantic, Florida where she taught choir, music technology, guitar, drama, music appreciation, and directed the school musicals. Mrs. Knappenberger earned a Master of Arts in Music with an emphasis on Choral Conducting from the University of Central Missouri and holds a Bachelor of Music Education from the Florida State University. Prior to her teaching career, Mrs. Knappenberger worked with the Wekiva River Players (a children’s theatre organization in Orlando, FL) as the music director for many of their shows, includingAristocats, Kids, andThe Music Man, Jr.Her stage roles include Fiordiligi from Mozart’sCosi fan tutteand Miss Todd from Menotti’sThe Old Maid and the Thief. Additionally, she has served as the soprano soloist for Vaughan Williams’Hodie,Schubert’sMass in G, and Mozart’sVesperae solennes de confessore.
Tuition for Campers:
Tuition includes all music instruction, materials, snacks and a camp T-shirt.
Commuter: Full Tuition: $285.00 (4/15-6/30) (includes lunches/dinners)

Camp Schedule - general:
The camp will begin on Tuesday afternoon, July 23, 2018, arrival time 2:00 pm. Students will participate in choral rehearsals, musicianship classes and recreational activities. Vocal Arts Camp concludes with a2:00 pm concert on Saturday July 29, 2018.
