(5) Languages typically contain a number of conventionalized “sayings” or clichés. Interestingly, such sayings often make claims about human behavior. As such, they can be thought of as informal psychological hypotheses. For example, consider the phrase “Opposites attract.” The meaning of this phrase is really a claim about what makes a person attractive (or unattractive) to us. Specifically, the cliché presents the hypothesis that the perceived attractiveness of another person is increased to the extent that that person is dissimilar from us. Is this hypothesis correct? Unfortunately, most clichés do not undergo rigorous experimental testing before entering the language, and as a result, may turn out to be misguided. However, one can form an hypothesis from a cliché and look for empirical evidence that either supports or does not support the hypothesis.

Choose one of the clichés listed below, develop an hypothesis from the cliché, and then conduct a literature search for empirical evidence that either supports or does not support your hypothesis.

Cliches

Absence makes the heart grow fonder. One bad apple spoils the bunch.

Actions speak louder than words.Out of sight, out of mind.

Blood is thicker than water. Two heads are better than one.

Easier said than done. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.

Every cloud has a silver lining.

Hell has no fury like a woman scorned.

Like father, like son.

(a) State the literal translation of the cliché you chose as an hypothesis: ______

______

(b) Conduct a literature search using PsycInfo to find one article that provides empirical evidence that either supports or does not support the hypothesis you listed in (a). In your own words, write a paragraph indicating why you think the article supports or does not support the hypothesis. Attach a copy of the Abstract of the article.
