Lesson Plan #3

Partnership- Denae Hauquitz, Angela Gonzales, and Nicole Miller

Grade Level: 1, 2

Subjects: Science, Health, and Literature

Area of Interest: Interactive Read-A-Loud

Activities: Sense of Taste and the 5 Senses Review

1.) Science:

Strand 2: Standard II (Life Science): Understand the properties, structures, and processes of living things and the interdependence of living things and their environments.

K-4 Benchmark III: Know the parts of the human body and their functions.

  1. Use the senses (e.g., sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch) to observe surroundings, and describe the observations.
  2. Identify the parts of the human body (e.g., legs, arms, head, hands) and the functions of these parts.

2.) Health:

Standard 1: Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention.

K-4 Benchmark: As a result of Health Instruction in Grades K-4, students will:

  1. Describe the basic structure and functions of the human body systems.

3.) Language Arts:

Strand 1 (Reading and Listening for Comprehension): Standard 1: Students will apply strategies and skills to comprehend information that is read, heard, and viewed.

K-4 Benchmark 1-A: Listen to, read, react to, and retell information.

1. Listen to and retell short stories.

2. Increase vocabulary through reading, listening, and interacting.

Student Objectives:

Students will gain knowledge of the use of the five senses: sight, hearing, taste, smell, and especially, for this lesson, taste. They will be able to recognize which sense they are using when trying to identify things. They will understand the sense and usefulness of the sense taste. They will understand the English vocabulary used in knowing the 5 senses.

Procedures:

  1. The students will sit down to listen to the read-a-loud.
  2. The teacher will first read the book The Five Senses: Taste by Maria Ruis so that the children learn about taste. While reading, the teacher is to ask questions such as “What does sour mean?” and “What body part does we use to taste things?” The teacher also asks questions about the pictures in the story. These questions create interaction between the teacher and students.
  3. The teacher will then read Me and My Senses by John Sweeney. Again while reading the book, the teacher will ask questions about the story, the vocabulary, the meaning, and the pictures.

Materials:

The Five Senses: Taste by Maria Ruis

Me and My Senses by John Sweeney

Duration:

The Five Senses: Taste by Maria Ruis---15 minutes

Me and My Senses by John Sweeney---15 minutes

Multicultural Curriculum Reform Approach:

These Interactive Read-A-Louds falls under the Contributions Approach because it is not into a high level of depth. The students learn the sense of taste and review the five senses without changing the structure of the curriculum. The concept of the sense of taste is added onto the curriculum of learning all five senses. The unit keeps building as each sense is added onto the curriculum.

Assessment:

Students participated in the activity willingly and accurately.

Students will gain awareness about the sense of taste and an overall review of all the 5 senses.

Students are able to show the importance of the sense of taste if asked.

Extension:

Lessons on the other 4 senses: Taste, Smell, Sight, and Hearing.

Review: Combine Sight, Touch, Smell, and Taste senses by blindfolding the students and handing them a type of food. First, without sight, they have to feel the food with their hands, then smell the food, then they can eat the food. Then the teacher shows them what they ate (works well with Oreos or Skittles).

Evaluation:

This lesson went so smoothly. These two read-a-louds were very interactive and the students paid attention. It was a lot of fun for both the teachers and the students. The students participated with theses read-a-louds happily because they are interesting books and they knew the material. They learned about the sense of taste in an interactive and fun way. After the read-a-louds, we did the Extension activity with oreos. They children got to review their senses, use them, and eat an oreo. We had great time learning about the sense of taste and reviewing all the senses.
