Position Description:

The President is the principal Executive Officer. The President shall be subject to the control of the Board of Directors and shall, in general, oversee the affairs of the Society. The President presides over the meetings of the members and the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee. The President is given authority to sign documents on behalf of the Board. At the end of the one-year term, the President remains on the Executive Committee for an additional year. The President also serves on the Executive Committee and Board of Directors.

What to Expect:

The President’s position is a leadership role - one to direct and implement the vision that ExCom has established through the strategic planning process. The President must guide the members of ExCom and committee chairs to ensure that projects and tasks are being kept to schedule and implemented on time. The President must represent the Society at official functions, which may require travel and time off from a work position. An estimated time commitment of five (5) to ten (10) hours per week on monthly commitments and reports, which includes, but are not limited to, President’s Report, contact with assigned chapters, weekly conference call with President-Elect and Executive Director, monthly ExCom phone conference, monthly ExCom / National Committee Chairs Conference Call, and quarterly Chapter Leadership Conference Call . Expect extra tasks and/or preparation for and EDSymposium as required. Ability to respond to email in a timely manner is required.

Duties and Responsibilities:

President

¨  Oversees the management of the organization

¨  Oversees the development and implementation of goals and objectives for the year that reflect the overall strategic plan

¨  Coordinates ExCom review of HQ contract

¨  Assures practices align with governance documents (bylaws and standing rules)

¨  Chairs and executes Annual Business Meeting

¨  Chairs and executes other phone conference Board of Directors meetings

¨  Facilitates monthly ExCom phone conference

¨  Facilitates monthly ExCom/Committee Chairs phone conference

¨  Facilities quarterly Chapter Leadership (Town Hall) phone conference

¨  Appoints EDSymposium chair

¨  Appoints Committee Chairs with approval of Executive Committee

¨  Appoints vacancies in the elected positions of Vice President, Secretary, or Treasurer with approval of Executive Committee

¨  Organizes and facilities annual ExCom strategic planning retreat

¨  Serves as primary communications officer with Executive Director

¨  Communicates with affiliated organizations as requested/determined by Executive Director

¨  Assesses the need for volunteers to enhance program/service delivery

¨  Conducts ongoing evaluation of the programs/services delivered by volunteers and implements improvements as necessary

¨  Prepares annual report and State of Society address

¨  Monthly letter to membership for SDA Today

¨  Responsible for crafting resolution for Past-President

¨  Attends Annual EDSymposium

¨  Attends Annual Business Meeting at EDSymposium

¨  Attends ExCom working meeting and ExCom transition meeting at EDSymposium

¨  Prepares and presents position-specific section of Annual Report at Annual Business Meeting.

¨  Attends ExCom Strategic Retreat (summer)

¨  Prepares monthly President’s Report to ExCom, noting all activity / action, items of interest or concern, and status of tasks for that month. Distributes to ExCom for monthly conference call

¨  Participates in all monthly ExCom conference calls, including quarterly financial review

¨  Participates in all Monthly ExCom / National Committee Chairs Conference Calls

¨  Participates in all Quarterly ExCom / Chapter Leadership Conference Calls

¨  Liaison to a number of chapters, as assigned by President

¨  Participates in all conference calls for liaison committees

¨  Supports the President, as needed, in overseeing and mentoring committee activities

¨  Authors articles for various SDA publications as determined in schedule

¨  Monitor website group discussions per scheduled assignment, and contributes as needed to ensure responses (or researches responses if unable to personally answer)

¨  Create chapter communication for use by all ExCom member per scheduled assignment (twice per year)

¨  Create Officer Bulletin one time during term, per scheduled assignment

¨  Complete tasks and assignments required and/or requested by President, President-Elect, and Executive Director

¨  Holds one vote on the Board of Directors
