Sticky Notes (Annotating) for The Giver

What is the purpose or goal of sticky notes? They are like mini-journals. Anything that you would write for a journal would be good to write on a sticky note. Here are a few areas to focus on:

·  Characterization: characters and how they develop, grow, and change or don’t change…what is the character learning (theme)?

·  Plot development: new or interesting events

·  Setting: think about the time and place of this utopia, physical buildings, organization of the community…

·  Theme: Is there a message that the author is trying to tell you through the story? What is the story saying about life or how we should live our lives?

·  Foreshadowing: look for places in the story that give hints about what is going to happen next

·  Symbol: a person, a place, a thing, or an event that has its own meaning and stands for something beyond itself

·  Utopia: pros or cons about the Giver community—this will help you write your persuasive essay!

·  Connections: to other stories, movies, or events that are similar to what you are reading; explain the connection

·  You can also mark the following with a sticky note:

o  New vocabulary

o  Confusing passage(s) that your would like to ask for help in understanding

o  Questions you have and want to discuss in class

After you have made at least 20 sticky notes, you will be typing or writing them in pen on paper. So keep track of them. You will need to label each with the topic (characterization, plot dev., setting…) and page number. See below for an example:

Plot dev. p. 8: Families are created by the community. You have to apply for a spouse and then if they determine you are eligible you get one. Each family consists of a mother, father, and two children (one boy, one girl). (This could also be labeled as a description of setting or a pro/con for the utopia.)
