A RESOLUTION proclaiming June 4, 2006, as Jack Jouett Day in Kentucky.
WHEREAS, on June 4, 1781, Jack Jouett courageously rode 40 miles through Virginia back country to Monticello and Charlottesville to warn Thomas Jefferson and the Virginia legislature about the approach and imminent attack of 250 British cavalrymen; and
WHEREAS, Jack Jouett's momentous ride averted the capture of Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, three signers of the Declaration of Independence, and most of the Virginia legislators, an act which would have dealt a crushing blow to the Revolutionary effort; and
WHEREAS, in 1782, Jack Jouett migrated to the District of Kentucky to engage in farming and cattle and horse breeding; and
WHEREAS, while in Kentucky, Jack Jouett became a leading citizen of Mercer, Woodford, and Bath Counties, representing Mercer County in the Virginia House of Delegates, serving as an active participant in the Statehood Convention in Danville, and representing Mercer and Woodford Counties in the Kentucky General Assembly; and
WHEREAS, June 3-4, 2006, is the 225th anniversary of Jack Jouett's heroic ride to save American Independence;
NOW, THEREFORE,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. June 4, 2006, is hereby proclaimed as Jack Jouett Day in Kentucky in commemoration of Jack Jouett's heroic ride in 1781, and in recognition of his many contributions to the early history of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
Section 2. A copy of this Resolution shall be transmitted by the Clerk of the House of Representatives to Sandra H. Marting, Chair, 225th Anniversary Celebration Committee, Woodford County Heritage Committee, 255 Craig's Creek Road, Versailles, Kentucky 40383.
