Downloading EndNote

These instructions are for installing EndNote on a PC running Microsoft Office XP. For assistance in installing EndNote on Macintosh computers, please contact the library.

You can download EndNote from the Bird Library website, or directly from the download url.

From the Bird Library web site: Go to the Bird Library website at http://library.ouhsc.edu/. Select the “E-resources” link on the left menu.

On the page that appears, select the “Bib/Doc Managment” link that appears under on the right menu. At this point you can follow the directions directly underneath the url below.

If at any time during this process you are prompted for your HSC logon, enter it in this manner:

Username
ouhsc\password

Direct url: Go to this url:

http://library.ouhsc.edu/ER_Home.cfm?where=Site_Content/E_Resources/ER_BibliographicManagement.cfm and click on the “EndNote” heading on the list of applications under Bib/Doc Managers.

You will be at a page entitled Become a Better Researcher. You’ll see a menu on the left side of the large box in the middle entitled Bib/Doc Managers. Under this link you’ll see several types of software listed. These are links. Click on the Endnote Link.

You’ll then see another page describing EndNote. Click on the “Download Endnote” link at the bottom of the text.

You’ll then see a page with the title EndNote, Reference Manager, and RefWorks, followed by a license agreement. Follow the instructions in the agreement and click the “Submit Request” button.

This brings you to a page containing only a listing of files. Examine the links in the rightmost column. Click on the link EndNoteX3.zip for the Windows download.

Save the file to your desktop. Your file may look like a folder with a zipper on it. If so, follow the directions labeled Extracting EndNote below.

If your file looks like a red and white cube, or a red and white document, this probably means that you have the StuffIt application on your computer. StuffIt is a file extraction utility that you can use to extract compressed files. If you need assistance in extracting an EndNote file in this format, please contact the library for assistance.

Extracting EndNote

If you need any assistance during this process, please call the library at 918-660-3220, or email the library.

1.  The folder on your desktop with a zipper on it is a compressed file, sometimes called a zip file. Double click it to open this file.

2.  You will see a file window with the title EndNoteX3.zip, and there will be two files in it. Do not open them..

3.  From the File menu of this folder, select the command Extract All… or Extract All Files. Please do not skip this step! If you do, the software will ask you for a registration key, which you will not have.

4.  The Extraction Wizard appears. Follow the instructions to extract the files. When the extraction process is complete, you will see another file window with the title EndNoteX3. It will contain a single folder called EndNoteX3. Open that folder.

5.  In that folder, you will see several files. Double click the file named enX3Inst.msi

6.  The EndNoteX3 setup window appears. Follow the instructions, selecting the Complete Installation type. The installation should then begin.

If at any point you are asked for a product key or a registration code, you probably skipped Step 3. Go back to the beginning and make sure that you extract the zip file. After the installation finishes, you will be ready to start using EndNote.
