A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
TO RECOGNIZE JERMAINE O’NEAL OF COLUMBIA, FOR HIS OUTSTANDING RECORD AND MANY ACHIEVEMENTS AS A YOUNG AND TALENTED ATHLETE AND STAR BASKETBALL PLAYER, COMMEND HIM FOR HIS TREMENDOUS SUCCESS IN MAKING THE LEAP FROM EAU CLAIRE HIGH SCHOOL TO THE PROFESSIONAL RANKS OF THE NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION AND BECOMING A STAR PLAYER WITH THE PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS, SEVERAL ALLSTAR AND NATIONAL TEAMS, AND THE INDIANA PACERS; AND CONGRATULATE AND EXTEND EVERY GOOD WISH TO HIM ON THE OCCASION OF EAU CLAIRE HIGH SCHOOL RETIRING HIS JERSEY ON FEBRUARY 5, 2003, WHICH IS THE FIRST TIME A JERSEY HAS BEEN RETIRED AT EAU CLAIRE HIGH SCHOOL.
Whereas, Jermaine O’Neal was born on October 13, 1978, in Columbia, South Carolina. Educated in the public schools of Columbia, he attended and graduated from Eau Claire High School in 1996; and
Whereas, while attending Eau Claire High School, Jermaine O’Neal racked up an impressive record as a young and talented athlete and star basketball player. He was named Player of the Year and Mr. Basketball in South Carolina, was selected to USA Today’s ALLUSA first team, and, in four seasons playing for Eau Claire High School his teams compiled a 9716 wonloss record, won three state AAA titles, and finished runnerup once; and
Whereas, while playing for Eau Claire High School, Jermaine O’Neal scored 1,372 points, grabbed 833 rebounds, and established school records for 16 blocks in a game, 170 blocks for a season, and 397 blocks during his high school career. With talent abounding, it was no surprise to his coaches and fellow players that he went directly to professional basketball after high school and was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers as the 17th overall pick in the 1996 NBA draft; and
Whereas, playing his first professional game against Denver on December 5, 1996, Jermaine O’Neal is the youngest player to make his pro debut in NBA history. O’Neal played with the Portland Trail Blazers until 19992000, playing in 211 games and averaging 3.1 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. He was traded to the Indiana Pacers in 200001 and has been playing outstanding basketball and compiling an amazing record with the Indiana Pacers ever since; and
Whereas, remembering those who raised, supported, and encouraged him during his formative years, Jermaine O’Neal lists his mother, Angela Ocean, and his Eau Claire High School coach, George Glymph, among his heroes. He has an older brother, Clifford. His hobbies include reading, bowling, playing video games and billiards. He is involved with the Boys & Girls Club and has hosted basketball camps in past summers. He also owns a recording studio, Bogota Entertainment, located in Atlanta, Georgia; and
Whereas, on February 5, 2003, at 1:30 p.m., Eau Claire High School will recognize the long hours, hard work, fierce determination, and uncanny athletic ability of Jermaine O’Neal, its star alumni and basketball hero, by retiring his jersey. In addition to being a signal honor, it will be a first for Jermaine O’Neal and Eau Claire High School, as this will be the first time any jersey has been retired at Eau Claire High School. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize Jermaine O’Neal of Columbia, for his outstanding record and many achievements as a young and talented athlete and star basketball player, commend him for his tremendous success in making the leap from Eau Claire High School to the professional ranks of the National Basketball Association and becoming a star player with the Portland Trail Blazers, several allstar and national teams, and the Indiana Pacers; and congratulate and extend every good wish to him on the occasion of Eau Claire High School retiring his jersey on February 5, 2003, which is the first time a jersey has been retired at Eau Claire High School.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Indiana Pacers and National Basketball Association star player Jermaine O’Neal, of Columbia.
