This guide will give you some information about the work your child will be involved in during this term.

Topic/Theme
World Around Us
/ Through our topics the following areas will be studied and investigated:
School’s Cool
  • Identify the jobs and work roles of people who help us in school.
Interview the caretaker to find out about her job.
  • Explore the main features of the school and identify rooms/features on a plan of the school.
  • Differences between schools in the past and in the present.
  • Research the history of our school & investigate the surrounding area.
  • Discuss landmarks and signs children see on their way to school. Children will draw a simple map of their route to school.
  • Timeline of school events.
  • Identify birds which visit our school and make bird cakes.
  • STEM (Science Technology Engineering & Maths) in groups pupils will design a playground and make a model of a piece of playground equipment using a variety of materials.
Let’s Celebrate
  • Celebrations in our own culture.
  • Sequence events and make a timeline of celebrations.
  • Research and explore some different traditions and celebrations around the world eg. Chinese New Year
  • Discuss the similarities and differences between Christmas in eg. Spain and NI
  • Celebrations and light.
  • STEM (Science Technology Engineering & Maths) pupils will design and make their own musical instrument for a celebration.

Literacy

  • Genre of Writing- Instructional and Report
  • Reading -Please talk with your child about the story, events and characters in the reading books as this will aid their understanding and enjoyment of the text. The children will complete reading activities related to their reading book in class.Each child will be heard reading in their group 2-3 times per week and some children will be heard every day.
  • Spellings- Daily spellings and a test on Friday.
  • Phonics– Review all single sounds/vowel sounds, ar, sh, ch, th, ng, qu, ff, ll, ss, zz, ck, wh,br, bl, cr, cl, ai,ee, ie, oa, ue, magic ‘e’ a__e, i___e, o__e, u__e

-recognise how certain behaviour affects feelings and emotions.

How to help at home / Please support and encourage your child by seeing that homework is done conscientiously. Take time to hear your child read and talk about the story together. Reinforce sight vocabulary and encourage your child to read unfamiliar words using a variety of strategies eg. read for meaning, phonics, visual cue, look at word endings, small word within a word... Your child will complete a range of puzzles and activities in their spelling booklet which will help to develop their understanding of the spellings. This will give you the opportunity to talk with your child about the words they are learning. Written homework will be reinforcement of work covered in class. Please ensure all written homework is completed and signed each night.
