COURSE DESCRIPTION

SPA 5035 (3). Principles of auditory reception; the hearing mechanism; problems involved in measuring, evaluating, and conserving hearing.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, the student will:

·  Demonstrate knowledge of hearing and hearing loss, including the impact on the development of speech and language and other areas of healthcare.

·  Have knowledge of the principles and methods of prevention, assessment, and intervention for people with hearing disorders

·  Have an understanding of the impact of hearing loss, including the impact on speech and language

·  Understand the fundamentals of screening and identifying hearing loss.

·  Have an understanding of the profession of Audiology and the role audiologists have in healthcare.

The grades from the weekly quizzes on the readings and PowerPoints will be averaged.

Important Note: TWO exams are scheduled on Fridays and ALL OTHERS on Mondays. Please be sure to mark your calendars to avoid inadvertently missing an examination. There will be no make examinations. It is possible that the lowest quiz grade will be dropped at the end of the semester, but that will be decided later in the semester.

EVALUATION METHODS and GRADING

The grades from the weekly quizzes on the readings and power points will be averaged and combined with the results on the final examination as follows:

Quiz average: 100% of final grade

A = 100-94

A- = 93-90

B+ = 89-87

B = 86-81

B- = 80-78

C+= 77-76

C = 75-72

C- = 71-70

D+= 69-68

D = 67-62

D- = 61-60

F = Below 60
