The Williston Northampton School, an independent, co-educational boarding and day school located in Easthampton, Mass., has an opening for a full-time, calendar-year Cook. Tuesday through Saturday 5:30 AM – 2:00 PM; 40 hours per week, may occasionally include some overtime for special event coverage.

Responsibilities will include: direct food preparation of buffet meals (about 1200 meals daily); chopping vegetables, preparing meats and measuring out ingredients; reviewing menus and analyzing recipes in order to determine which ingredients are needed; planning menus and food utilization based on anticipated number of students, faculty and staff dining, nutritional value, palatability, popularity, and costs; establishing and enforcing nutritional standards for independent school dining services; assisting in the preparation and service of menu items as assigned by Head Chef, or Production Manager; cooking and preparing menu items according to acceptable food preparation methods; garnishing and presenting foods for consumption in an acceptable and appealing manner; coordinating assignments with other cooking personnel in order to ensure economical use of food and timely preparation; maintaining clean, safe work areas free of clutter that ensures proper production of wholesome and palatable food items in a timely and efficient manner; maintaining production equipment and food storage systems; utilizing knowledge and understanding of safe food handling and storage guidelines; reviewing work procedures and operational problems in order to determine ways to improve service, performance and/or safety; some scratch baking. Must be physically capable of: standing for substantial periods of time; reaching; bending, pushing, kneeling, crouching, stooping; lifting and handling boxes, trash containers, trays of food, and other items that may be up to 50 lbs of weight; carrying, moving, transporting materials and foodservice equipment. The successful candidate: must have three to five years of progressive experience preferably in an educational setting; will preferably have a culinary degree; will have demonstrated strong organizational, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills and the ability to multi-task; will have knowledge gained through prior positions in food handling, storage, cooking and related areas; must be able to work intuitively and independently as well as part of the Dining Services food production team; will have a solid working knowledge food service equipment; must have the ability to work in a school environment by successfully passing the state mandated CORI, Criminal Offender Record Information check, a SORI, Sex Offender Record Information check and a general background check; must be able to pass a post offer employment physical.
