WHO DOES THIS PROGRAM SERVE? / Students enrolled at Korah Collegiate High School in Sault Ste. Marie
PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAM / START Program classrooms focus on teaching the students life skills and behaviour skills that will assist with retention, and a positive, successful reintegration into mainstream classes.
START Program classrooms are designed to consider the individual needs of the student when determining the methods of intervention and progress.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION / Students are enrolled in full or part-time schedules and attend at least one class that is specifically designated a START Program classroom.
Each START student has access to the Algoma Family Services Counsellor on a daily basis, with scheduled individual counselling sessions and drop-in access (on school site or in office) as needed. The AFS Counsellor and client determine the level of intervention (outreach or full-file with follow-up) and implement individual treatment plans attending to mental health needs and the impact/influence on academic needs and progress, with the goal of progressive successes at school and in their general well-being and health.
The AFS Counsellor and client participate in collaborative relationships, determined by the client and recommended by the counsellor, with regards to accessing other service providers to support the client's treatment plan goals.
WAIT TIMES / Wait times for admission and placement into the START Program are determined by Korah Collegiate Administration and Algoma District School Board. Upon admission into the Program, there are no wait times to access the AFS Counsellor.
ACCESSING SERVICE / The admission and placements into the START Program are determined by Korah Collegiate High School and the Algoma District School Board. Once a student is enrolled in START, he/she can access AFS Counsellor immediately.
