Title: Magic Food

Content Area:

/ Science

NC SCOS Objective(s):

/ Competency Goal 4: The learner will conduct investigations and use appropriate technology to build an understanding of how food provides energy and materials for growth and repair of the body.
4.01 Explain why organisms require energy to live and grow.
4.03 Discuss how foods provide both energy and nutrients for living organisms.
4.05 Determine that foods are made up of a variety of components

Materials:

/ How Tia Lola Came to Visit/Stay by Julia Alvarez
Recipes for quipes and empanaditas de queso
Food Pyramid

Instructions/Procedures:

/ Discuss the chapter when Miguel believes Tia Lola is giving him magic food in order to make the baseball team. Why did he think she was making the food magic?
Discuss that eating the right foods does make you stronger and think better than junk foods. Look over the recipes for the treats Tia Lola gave to Miguel and compare them to the Food Pyramid. Was she giving him healthy foods compared to the Pringles and pizza he was used to eating?
Explain that the components in food are broken down inside of us to give us all the required energy we need to live. Without the proper nutrition, we have less energy and are more likely to get sick and lose our concentration. This can result in poor grades, lethargy, and not being able to play a sport as well as we would like.
*Extension – if possible, get the ingredients together for the recipes and make the quipes and empanaditas de queso.
