This is IlleanaHererra, Assistant Principal at Jordan-Matthews High School, with your weekly announcement. Copies of all messages can be found on our school website.

Hopefully, everyone is excited and pumped for another school year. As a reminder, first period begins promptly at 8:00 a.m. All students should be prepared and report directly to their first period class, following the draft schedule received in the mail or at freshmen orientation. If you lost your schedule your schedule or did not receive one, don’t panic. We will have school staff available to get students to their first period class in order to receive their full schedule.

As a reminder, in order for a student to receive a laptop, parents and students must sign a laptop agreement form. These will be distributed to students on Tuesday. In addition, all parents of freshmen and new students to Jordan-Matthews must attend either parent orientation on the laptop process that has been scheduled. You can either attend the session scheduled for Tuesday, August 25th at 6:00 p.m. or another session scheduled for Tuesday, September 1st at 6:00 p.m. We plan to distribute laptops to students on September 2nd and 3rd, as long as students and parents have signed the proper agreements.

I would like to share with you several policies that we will be enforcing on the first day. It is important that students come to school and report to each class, every day. Students who miss too many days will likely fail and will not be successful. Please help with getting your child to school each day ready to begin at 8:00 a.m.

As for student dress, students should be dressed for success. Students are not permitted to wear hats, headgear, or sunglasses in the building during the school day. It is best to leave those items at home. Sleeveless shirts and tops are not permitted along with spaghetti straps, tank tops, or racer backs. Students should also not wear tight or short shorts along with no rolled up shorts at the waist. Pajama bottoms are not permitted nor should students wear tight or short skirts or dresses. We appreciate your support with our dress code, keeping in mind we want students to dress for success.

Outside food or drink is not permitted other than a water bottle. Lunches from home will of course be permitted. Finally, I would like to explain our electronic device policy, as we have enhanced it slightly from previous years. Cell phones and all other electronic devices must be turned off during all periods of instructional time unless permission has been granted by the teacher for educational purposes. Students are permitted to use their devices before and after school, between classes and during lunch. Phones are not permitted to be used when students are in classes, including going to the restroom. Emergency situations should be addressed directly with the teacher. If a staff member asks for an electronic device and the student refuses to give it up, he/she will receive disciplinary consequences. A parent in the main office must pick up confiscated devices after school.

All policy information will be shared with students on the first day, but I wanted to make sure you were aware of the basic policies. We must all work together to ensure a safe, orderly, educational environment, and we greatly appreciate your support.

Our motto for the year is “Our Community. Our School. My J-M.” We look forward to your participation in this journey throughout the school year.

Enjoy the rest of your day and let’s have an amazing week. Goodbye.
