MBAMKT 697 Brand Management

Brand Management is an advanced MBA elective that addresses important branding decisions faced by an organization. It is organized around the product and brand management decisions that must be made to build, measure, and manage brand equity. More specifically, students will learn how to 1) establish strong and competitive positions, 2) create brand resonance with customers, 3) integrate brand marketing programs, 4) align internal and external marketing activities, 5) understand the ROI of marketing investments, 6) leverage brand equity across categories and markets, 7) achieve market balance in managing brand equity over time, 8) design and implement brand strategies, and 9) envision the future of branding, etc.

Because today’s marketplace is increasingly globalized, diverse, and information-oriented, this course is taught in the context of global and ethical issues, the influence on organizations of political, social, environmental and technological issues, and the impact on organizations of demographic diversity.

MBA AF 697 Accounting Fraud Examination

Accounting fraud and earnings manipulation by managements of publicly traded companies are a continuing source of anxiety and concern to investors, creditors, and others who depend upon financial statements. In recent years the foundations of the capital markets have been “shaken and stirred” by disclosures of management schemes to “cook the books.” Not surprisingly, the accounting profession has received some very severe criticism. Some critics of the profession accuse public company auditors of aiding, abetting, and facilitating management manipulations of financial statements. Some of this criticism is rightly deserved and some not. The challenge confronting the current generation of students entering the accounting profession is to regain public trust and confidence in the work product of the profession.

As preparation for the demands of the profession, it is important for students to have a thorough understanding of the inherent limitations of accounting and knowledge of the nature, prevention, and detection of financial statement fraud. This course examines the various aspects of accounting fraud and its impact on the financial information presented using various techniques to assess the risks of financial statement fraud. This course provides accounting students with the resources needed to implement current legislative (Sarbanes-Oxley) and professional guidelines (Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) and Auditing Standards Board (ASB)).

MSIS 697 IT Strategy and Operations

The main goal of the course is to understand the nature of organizational information technology (IT) resources, e.g., information systems (IS) applications, technology infrastructure, enterprise systems, IT personnel, and IT-enabled resources, and their value in leading to organizational success. This course is particularly designed to help students to understand the emerging trends and issues relating to organizational IT management practices within contemporary firms. Students can achieve managerial perspectives on both strategic and operational decisions to optimize organizational IT value. For this, good management practices in deploying and utilizing IT resources will be discussed during the semester.

MBAMS 697 Operational Risk Management

The constantly changing nature of virtually all aspects of business (supply, demand, technology, interest rates, exchange rates, regulations…) has exposed the organizations to ever-increasing risks. Therefore, the ability to assess and manage risk is an essential element of each successful business. The globalization trend has intensified this necessity. This trend has extended the chain of supply and demand to many different regions all around the world. Therefore, businesses are exposed to risks in many more regions.

This course discusses the role of “operational risk management” in different aspects of business. The course starts with a session on definitions and preliminary discussions to show the big picture of the risk management discipline. The course then shows how different risks that an organization faces can be categorized according to their natures, probabilities and impacts. This is followed by describing how the probability of these risks can be reduced and how the impacts can be mitigated. The course finally focuses on how an organization can recover faster and more efficiently form a realized risk.

This course is different from “financial risk management” since it does not discuss financial instruments to hedge against risks. Rather it tries to show how “operational decisions” can influence the probability and impacts of different types of risks. In addition, this class discusses how to plan for recovery process.

Throughout this course, the emphasis is to show not only the importance of managing the inevitable risks as a source of threat, but also the possibility of using risk management techniques to turn risks into a source of opportunity for organizations.

MBA AF 697 Quantitative Analysis of Business Data

The goal of this course is for you to become familiar with the analytical foundations of

quantitative analysis of business data. Particular emphasis will be placed on hands-on experience

with data analysis and the economic interpretation of empirical findings. We will focus on

learning a number of quantitative techniques employed in finance, economics and management.

The first part of each class is designed to teach you a core concept, while the second part of each

class is designed to help you apply that technique by working with data using the Stata statistical

package. These techniques include linear regression analysis, panel data models, selected topics

in time series analysis, and limited dependent variable models. Throughout the semester, we will

discuss papers, datasets and applications that are drawn from the finance and economics literature."

MBAMGT 684 Social Enterprise

Social enterprise thus represents an organization crossbreed, blending defining elements of the business and nonprofit models. Like a business, social enterprise tries to pay its own way with income derived from buying and selling, and like a nonprofit, it aims to fill a particular social deficiency or correct a certain market failure associated with poverty. As opposed to maximizing shareholder value the way a prototypical business does, a social enterprise may retain its surplus to further its social mission, distribute it to its membership, or even repay its creditors and investors at a modest return.
