AP Chemistry Syllabus/ Tentative Course Outline

The following includes the materials, expectations, and course outline for AP Chemistry. Please note AP Chemistry is a college course therefore, the responsibility to complete work and maintain good lab records goes to the student. In order to successfully fulfill the requirements of the course, students should expect to spend at least 5 hours on individual studies each week outside of class.

Materials

Notebooks- Each students will be required to maintain a notebook that contains a section for class work and a section for chapter assignments. In addition, the student should have a system for organizing notes and handouts that are provided during lecture.

Textbooks- The main textbook used for this course is Chemistry: the Central Science 11th edition by Brown, LeMay, Burten, and Murphy. A supplementary text titled the Ultimate Chemical Equations Handbook by Hague and Smith will be used also.

Computer/ Web Materials An online program calledMasterchemistrywill be used to give extra practice for the unit tests and to prepare of the AP exam in May.

Solution Manuals/ Solution Sets- Each student will have access to a solutions manual and/or a solution set. It is the responsibility of the student to complete each homework set and check their work.

Laboratory Materials- Students will be given a lab manual or lab sheets depending on the lab chosen. These materials shall be brought to every class prior to a lab as well as their scheduled lab period. All students are expected to be prepared at any time for a pre-lab or post-lab quiz related to laboratory work (skills, analysis, and content are all possible content for a quiz).

Laboratory Notebook- Each student shall maintain a laboratory notebook as an official record of all laboratory data collected. The lab notebook will be graded at the end each quarter. Notebooks will be graded on content (all data present) and presentation (neatness and clarity of data). Lab notebooks must be submitted on time to receive full credit. A 20% reduction will be given to all late work.

Test Correctionsmust be completed by all students receiving a “D” or “F”. Any student receiving an “A”, “B” or “C” has the option of completing test corrections. Each correction must include the correct answer, an explanation (complete sentence) as to why the answer is correct, and if necessary any work related to answering the question successfully. Correctly completed test corrections must be submitted 1 week after a test is returned in order receive 1/3 of credit back for each correction.

Homeworkis the student’s responsibility to complete. Each week one lecture class will include a question and answer session to go over any questions regarding the homework assignment. All assignment notebooks will be collected the day of the test. No late assignments will be accepted.
