Things to know:
I appreciate your cooperation. I am excited to have your student this year! Ag Construction is part of our Ag Power and Construction Career Pathway. To complete the pathway they would take Principles of Agriscience (a foundation course in agriculture), Small Power (offered 13-14, 15-16) and one other CTE course of their choosing. Upon completion of the 4 courses, their junior or senior year they will take a KOSSA exam in that area for college credit and to be considered Career Ready. We want all students at HCHS to be both College and Career Ready!
If your student is new to our department then there are a few things you may want to know. Our agriculture program is a little bit different than a typical classroom because it is composed of 3 integrated components: the classroom, FFA and SAE. Our classroom will involve labs and lectures most days but it is the other 2 components that make our department different. All students enrolled in agriculture classes are encouraged to join the National FFA organization. The dues are $15 per year ($7 to National FFA, $5 to KY FFA, $1 to Capital City Region, $2 to HCHS). If this is a problem you can give me a call and we will work something out. We want every student to have the opportunity to join FFA. FFA is a leadership organization for students interested in agriculture. Our chapter has had many accomplishments including being one of the top 15 chapters in Kentucky last year.
There are opportunities for every student to get involved. We have judging teams, mechanics teams, speaking contests, conventions, leadership training and much, much more! The student will be learning more about these as the year progresses and we encourage them all to find something they will enjoy in this organization. Our first organized trip will be August 18th as we go to the KY State Fair. Cost is $8 and includes transportation, ticket and a meal- you can’t beat that! We will leave at 10:30am and return at 8:15pm. All FFA members are invited to attend with us. Students who go will volunteer at the Kentucky Beef Council Booth for children called Beef Basics for a 2-3 hour shift.
The SAE aspect involves a “supervised agricultural experience”. This means they are required to have some type of project outside of class that relates to agriculture and will be required to keep some simple records on time or money spent or earned. We will help your student to find something that suits their needs and abilities. This program is designed to prepare the student for entering the work world and to help them develop their vocational skills.
I am excited about this year and I am looking forward to teaching this class. I promise that I will provide the best learning environment I can and with everyone’s cooperation (myself, students and guardians) we are going to have an amazing year. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to call or email me.
Please sign at the bottom of the back of this sheet so I can be sure we are all on the same page. This will be your students’ first grade in my class. Thank you!

Redirecting Procedures:
- All teachers will be using the same strategy for minor offenses to ensure learners are focused and in the moment. Each student will get up to 3 redirects for off-task behavior and will be given a chance to fix it. The third redirect will include a discussion in the hallway with the teacher. The fourth redirect will be an immediate problem solving session with an administrator.
- Cell phones will be taken up on the first redirect and will be turned in to the office.
- Major offenses (those which can not be dealt with in the classroom) will be an immediate removal from the classroom by an administrator.
- The student handbook located in their agendas has the official behavior matrix which will be enforced.
Sincerely,
Lindsey Davie
