a. SIAS’ 8TH GRADE MATH SYLLABUS
Dear Parents,
It is with pleasure that I welcome your child to the 8thgrade at Opelousas Jr. High School. I am looking forward to working with both you and your child. With your cooperation, I am sure this will be a very exciting and rewarding school year.
It is important that we work together to ensure the highest quality of education for your child. Communication is the key to achieving this goal. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to call the school and leave a message. I will return your call as soon as possible. SUPPLIES: Students will be using Big Ideas Math textbooks and Big Ideas Math Record and Practice Journal. Each student will receive a folder to keep a record of daily classroom and extra practice assignments. Each student will receive a folder to keep a recordof Daily Warm-Up and Essential Questions Worksheets, classroom, homework, and extra practice assignments. The folders are color coded for each class. Daily Warm-Upsand Essential Questions are worth 5 points each.
**Extra practice with PARCC Assessment items will come from 8th grade Math Chapter PARCC Practice Problems Worksheets.
Other daily requirements for class include: (1) pencils and erasers, (2) onenotebook (for extra practice assignments and six weeks projects), (3) textbook, (4) practice journal, (5) an open mind for learning, and (6) a willing attitude to participate.
HOMEWORK: Homework assignments will be given to provide extra practice for skills that require reinforcement. All homework assignments should be completed for class discussion the following day. Practice books must be brought to class every day. Homework assignments are worth 5-10 points.

TESTS:
Comprehensive exams assess skills learned within each chapter, as well as a review of skills previously learned. These exams will be given after every chapter, and includes multiple choice and task problems, and are worth 100 points.
Fluency tests will be given at least 1-2 times each 9-week period to assess and master computational skills required for each grade level. Fluency tests will have from 5 to 20 problems and are worth from 50 to 100 points each.
Vocabulary quizzes are given every 9-week period and includes vocabulary terms, symbols, formulas, and concepts learned within those two weeks. They are worth 100 points.
COMPUTER LAB: Students will attend computer lab once every other week to review and reinforce skills taught, using the Big Ideas student accounts (Big Ideas Math website), EAGLE program, MobieMax, and Achieve 3000. Computer lab scores will serve as a 100-point grade.
GRADING SCHEDULE: Grades will consist of a minimum of 700 points each six weeks. Progress Reports will be sent home at the end of the 4th week of each 9-week period.

The following page lists the classroom rules, consequences, awards, and procedures. **All rules and procedures must be followed – there are NO exceptions. **

Also, on the back of the rules is a Student Information Sheet. Please fill this portion out so that I may be able to contact you when needed. (This information will be filed in the classroom).

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES
1.Place book bag under desk, sharpen pencils, get folder, and complete Daily Warm-Up/Essential Question.
2.Have all materials on desk, be seated, and be ready to work when bell rings.
3.Complete class assignment and participate in class discussions.
4.At end of class, complete exit slip, copy homework, pack book bags, stay seated and wait to be dismissed.
NOTE: Grooming needs are to be handled outside of classroom (items will be confiscated).
Electronic devises are not allowed at any time in class. Excessive absences prove to be a
challenge because workload doubles over time..
I have read the Parent Letter and the classroom rules, consequences, rewards, and procedures. I have gone over everything with my child. He/she has agreed to follow it. I understand that failure to comply with the rules of your classroom will result in undesirable consequences.
